Silicon Valley’s Startup Labs Partners with Wayra

Global early stage investment fund partners up with Wayra Mexico

MEXICO CITY--()--Startup Labs, a global co-investment program for tech startups that focuses on emerging markets, is excited to announce a partnership with Wayra, the international startup seed fund and accelerator backed by Spanish telco giant Telefónica. Startup Labs, based in San Francisco, will be listening to Mexican startups’ pitches in Mexico City to help select the 10 Wayra teams and invest alongside the Mexican investment house.

Startup Labs who previously invested in Mexican startups such as Yaxi, InstaDM and Bandtastic, travels to emerging markets to discover the most promising early stage tech startups and invest in them with local investors. They hope to gather and empower local investors to create the funding startups need in order to take advantage of growth opportunities in emerging economies and also create and attract a strong deal flow.

Thanks to this partnership, Wayra’s accelerated startups will have access to Startup Labs’ global investment and training ecosystem including influencers and prominent businesses who drive innovation in each region; explore cross-border expansion opportunities; have a very strong landing pad in the Valley. For 2013, Startup Labs has plans to visit over 25 cities on four continents and gather at least 100 local investors together to invest in +125 startups around the world.

“Mexico is one of the most exciting markets for us and I am very excited to be partnering up with Wayra Mexico in their efforts to create and promote a quality entrepreneurial ecosystem. We will be mixing Wayra’s expertise with a global Silicon Valley context and we are very committed to the region’s entrepreneurial development,” says Tugce Ergul, Director at Startup Labs.

Marcus Dantus, Head of Wayra Mexico, also commented “we are very excited to partner with Startup Labs, their emerging market focus as well as their experience accelerating and supporting startups in general is an ideal complement to Wayra Mexico´s skills and reach. As Mexico becomes an innovation-based economy, being accompanied by a Silicon Valley firm in our investments is truly inspirational for both ourselves and our entrepreneurs.”

This initiative partnership reinforces both Wayra’s and Startup Labs’ aim of becoming global household names in the ICT sector, attracting top-notch partners around the globe and offering its startups, wherever it has operations, the best tools and services to make them into successful businesses.
