BOSTON--()--English afternoon tea holds a special place in history and today, The Langham, Boston, continues the tradition with the launch of “Tiffin at The Langham.” Served seven days a week at The Reserve, the luxury hotel’s recently opened lobby lounge, the quintessentially British mid-afternoon delight pays homage to the first afternoon tea served in Europe at the first “grand hotel,” The Langham, London back in 1865.

“Afternoon tea is an important signature of Langham hotels around the world and we are honored to join them in serving “Tiffin at The Langham,” a tradition that began in 1865 with the opening of The Langham, London,” said The Langham, Boston Managing Director Serge Denis. “We look forward to sharing a piece of history with Boston while creating an exquisite culinary experience that will delight our guests.”

Presented on custom-made Wedgwood® China by a team of meticulously trained service professionals, “Tiffin at the Langham,” features a selection of sweet and savory tea fare and an extensive selection of fresh teas. As an innovation and celebration of its history, The Langham serves four specially created tea blends:

  • The Langham Breakfast – A sophisticated mix of Assam, Darjeelings and Tippy Golden Orange Pekoe black teas
  • Palm Court Exotic – A perfect blend of Chinese Fujian white tea, hibiscus flowers, rosehip peel and rose petals
  • Silk Road – Chinese Silver Needle white teas blended with jasmine and Iranian rosebuds to an aromatic and evocative tea
  • English Flower – Chamomile, rose petals, elderflowers, heather flowers, lavender and cornflowers are combined to make a relaxing herbal and floral blend

In addition to the specialty Langham teas “Tiffin at The Langham” features 16 blends from Harney & Sons master tea blenders.

To complement the tea blends, Executive Chef Mark Sapienza created a variety of savory finger sandwiches including coorination chicken salad vol-au-vent; house smoked salmon on Boston brown bread; crème fraîche, Egg and chive on brioche; and Cucumber with white pepper and dill on French white. Executive Pastry Chef Jed Hackney’s fresh cream scones are served with traditional Devonshire clotted cream; strawberry jam; and lemon curd, while sweets include Raspberry linzer; Boston cream pie; Marmalade fruit tart; and Lemon poppy seed tea cake. An addition to the Tiffin menu, The Langham, Boston offers champagne tea service featuring Maine lobster salad Mary Rose and a glass of Moët & Chandon champagne or Roeder Estate Rose.

Her Majesty’s Consul General to Boston Susie Kitchens hosted the inaugural “Tiffin at The Langham” afternoon tea with The Langham, Boston Managing Director Serge Denis on Wednesday evening with a host of local luminaries from the British community in Boston.

“I am delighted that the Langham Hotel in Boston is launching a proper British ‘Tiffin’ Afternoon tea, just in time for the New England winter to hit properly,” said Kitchens. “It’s a great opportunity to celebrate all things British, maintaining the momentum of 2012 with the Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympics, both of which Boston celebrated in style. I’m looking forward to raising a cup of tea to 2013, with the new royal baby arriving in summer and everyone enjoying great British culture in Boston, from Downton Abbey to a new Restoration exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts.”

The luxurious ritual of Afternoon Tea was established in 1840 by Anna, 7th Duchess of Bedford, who served it to ward off hunger pangs in the long hours between lunch and dinner. Her personal indulgence grew into an experience to be shared with her friends, and soon a tradition was born.

In 1865, The Langham, London was Europe’s first grand hotel to serve Afternoon Tea. Acknowledged as one of the most elegant and sophisticated of dining occasions, it was served in the Salle À Manger, or general dining room. Today, Afternoon Tea is a brand signature, called Tiffin at The Langham. The origins of the word “tiffin” are derived from the Indian English slang “tiffing,” which translates to taking a little drink or sip.

“Tiffin at The Langham” afternoon tea is served daily from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. by reservation only. Call 617.451.1900 for reservations or visit boston.langhamhotels.com for more information. The Reserve at The Langham, Boston is located at 250 Franklin Street, Boston, MA 02110.
