FORT MYERS, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--21st Century Oncology, the nation’s premier cancer treatment network and largest radiation therapy provider, and Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), one of the nation’s leading health care and well-being companies, today announced a national agreement to enact case rate reimbursement for radiation therapy services.
The partnership between 21st Century Oncology and Humana will make strides toward new, more efficient and innovative payment methodologies for the future. Going beyond traditional methods, the new, reimbursement model ‘bundles’ all payments for a patient’s treatment for a specific condition. Because the bundled payment reimbursement model covers all procedures performed during a particular episode of care, it streamlines claims payment, eliminating administrative waste and also enables better care coordination across providers.
“Over the last decade, the advancements made in evidence-based clinical treatment guidelines for cancer care have been staggering,” stated Constantine A. Mantz, M.D., Board Certified radiation oncologist and 21st Century Oncology’s Chief Medical Officer. “We believe that translating these proven best practices into a bundled format that comprises a widely-supported group of medical services will benefit patients. The agreement with Humana serves as an example of how collaboration and innovation can support efficient, high-quality health care.”
“Humana chose to partner with 21st Century Oncology in our continuing efforts to deliver quality, affordable health care,” said Bill Barnes, Humana’s Vice President of National Contracting. “We also believe this partnership can improve administrative efficiencies with health care providers in Humana’s national network.”
The agreement became effective on August 1, 2012.
