CHARLOTTE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Just moments ago, licensed contractor and host of DIY Network’s Blog Cabin, Matt Blashaw, knocked on the door of Charlotte’s Alan Young announcing that he is the winner of DIY Network and Food Network Magazine’s “Worst Kitchen in America” contest. Young, a flight attendant for US Airways, was selected based on a video and photo submitted to DIYNetwork.com illustrating how his current kitchen was cramping his style. The entire makeover will be documented on a one-hour special on DIY Network in January 2012 and Food Network Magazine’s January/February issue. Young also gets a trip for two to attend the New York City Wine & Food Festival, including a meet and greet with Food Network host Chef Anne Burrell.
Young, who has a big passion for cooking, was never able to entertain as his kitchen has no counter space and only two functioning burners. Not only was the flight attendant unable to renovate that space because of his limited time at home and a recent pay cut, but his residence was also recently vandalized. Despite it all, his friends are quick to say that he always puts others before himself, including giving his own furniture to a close friend who was going through a divorce.
“The look on Alan’s face when we surprised him was fantastic,” commented DIY Network expert and licensed contractor, Matt Blashaw, “Especially after hearing Alan’s story, I can’t think of a person more deserving of the kitchen remodel. I can’t wait to get started on the project and get Young into a space for him to cook comfortably and entertain!”
Young has described his style as eclectic and transitional while leaning towards sophisticated, timeless and modern. DIY Network and Food Network Magazine will incorporate his aesthetic and put an end to Alan’s “Worst Kitchen in America” by providing a brand new kitchen decked out with all of the hottest amenities including granite and glass composite countertops, floating shelving and stainless steel appliances.
