REDWOOD CITY, Calif--(BUSINESS WIRE)--BigBand Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: BBND), a leader in digital video networking, today announced that it had expanded the footprint for its industry leading Switched Digital Video (SDV) solution to the China market with China’s Jiangsu Broadcasting Television Network Corporation Limited (Jiangsu Cable). This is BigBand’s first commercial SDV deployment outside of North America and will free up the bandwidth necessary for the growing demand for more high definition (HD) video on demand (VOD) services in China.
Jiangsu Cable is one of the largest cable operators in China with over 17 million subscribers. The company selected Zhenjiang as the initial regional deployment of SDV within the province and plans to expand to other cities in coming years to address the bandwidth limitations for multi-services delivery. The deployment supports Jiangsu Cable’s vision of “becoming the best quality and most reliable operator of integrated radio and broadcasting network in China”. BigBand was selected because Jiangsu Cable valued BigBand’s market leadership in SDV, its ability to support open standards and protocols, and the demonstrated compatibility with the existing BigBand Broadband Multimedia-Service Router (BMR®) systems that have been widely deployed in Jiangsu’s network.
“As a cost effective solution for cable operators, SDV is becoming an attractive approach to offer virtually unlimited bandwidth,” said Mr. Xu Rugang, Senior Vice President of Jiangsu Cable. “Given our long standing relationship with BigBand and its proven track record in supporting our network requirements, it was the right partner to help us successfully execute China’s first SDV deployment. We are confident that SDV is the best solution to expand our network to deliver more quality video services to our subscribers over the coming years.”
Today’s announcement marks another key milestone in the relationship between Jiangsu Cable and BigBand. Previously, the companies announced a first-of-a-kind strategic agreement to deliver interactive and personalized video services and the successful roll-out of the BigBand BMR to process and deliver digital television services, including HD and interactive television.
“Being selected by our longstanding customer, Jiangsu Cable, is an important milestone for the company, representing our first commercial deployment outside of North America for SDV and supporting our global growth initiative,” said Amir Bassan-Eskenazi, CEO, President and Co-founder of BigBand Networks. “We believe that realizing the potential for SDV to meet the bandwidth demands for more video applications and services is crucial to helping our customers stay ahead of the competition, while opening up a large market opportunity for BigBand. We are honored that Jiangsu Cable selected us to help further their vision for the delivery of truly interactive and personalized video services.”
BigBand’s SDV solution continues to lead the market and has been deployed, or is being deployed, by six of the top 10 cable operators in North America, passing over 37 million households. As the leading provider of SDV, BigBand has accumulated a wealth of experience and a defined deployment process that enables its professional services team to install and initiate a SDV system in as little as 90 days.
