Utah CEO Sean Whalen and Rugby Super League Announce New Utah Team, Utah Warriors

Utah Rugby Team Attracts Local and International Talent

SALT LAKE CITY--()--Utah entrepreneur, radio personality and sports enthusiast Sean Whalen will soon be known for more than his fast-growing Orem company, Property23. Whalen, CEO of real estate firm Property23, today announced an agreement with the Rugby Super League (RSL) to create the league’s newest team, the Utah Warriors, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Utah Warriors have brought together an excellent coaching staff, world-class players and an excitement about rugby being played in Utah.

“I am excited to bring the highest level of rugby in America to my home state of Utah,” said Whalen. “There has been amazing support and excitement from fans and sponsors that we have been working with, and I’m sure with the official announcement of the team, the excitement will continue to grow. We plan to immediately take this team to the highest level, and we will make sure our team is prepared and ready to challenge our opponents with the goal to win the Super League Championship in 2011.”

Jon Law, former President of the Utah Rugby Union, seasoned rugby player and coach, has accepted the position as head coach with the Utah Warriors. Law was instrumental in the winning of four consecutive National Championships for the great Highland rugby program, and in addition to this Law won a National Championship as a player on the Highland team when he was just a ninth grader.

“I’m excited at the level of talent that we’ve attracted to this team,” Law said. “With the player talent, we have created a top-notch team that can rival any team in the league. We are expecting great things from the Utah Warriors.”

Sean Whalen and Jon Law have attracted key players to the team such as U.S. National players Mike Palefau and Jason Pye. “The addition of the Warriors to the RSL is very exciting. In the past, National Team players based in Utah had no choice but to go elsewhere to play top-level club rugby. This new team will give accessibility to top rugby for the many talented players in Utah at all levels,” said Pye.

The Rugby Super League consists of 12 teams across the country. They each play six regular season games, beginning in March. Since 1996 the Rugby Super League has exemplified the highest level of professional rugby in the United States, and is the premier American organization for developing great rugby talent.

RSL President Sean Kelly says, “We are thrilled to welcome the Utah Warriors into the league, and look forward to their participation. The Super League includes many talented teams that have been playing rugby at a high level for many years, and we’re excited at the level of talent that Sean and Jon have attracted to the Utah Warriors.”

Rugby is wildly popular in Europe and throughout the world, and has been gaining popularity in the U.S. For more information on the Rugby Super League, visit http://www.premier-rugby.com. For more information on the Utah Warriors, go to http://utahwarriorrugby.com or call (801) 854-1603.
