Key to seminars and discussions at Interop New York will be Virtualization. Virtualization is being rapidly adopted because it can lower the cost and increase the flexibility of IT infrastructure. A new white paper, The Importance of Defragmentation in Virtual Environments, co-authored by Osterman Research and Diskeeper Corporation, demonstrates that virtual environments require defragmenting even more than physical environments. This is due to the fact that virtual environments support multiple operating systems and create a higher intensity of disk activity.

“The need for defragmentation is even more acute in virtual environments,” the white paper states. “This is because physical hardware in a virtualized storage environment must support more operating systems and so can undergo even more disk access and more stress than in a non-virtualized environment. Further, disk I/O in one virtual machine has a cascading effect on disk I/O in other virtual machines, and so the problem of excessive disk I/O in virtual machines is, in fact, even worse than what would be experienced in a physical disk environment.”

V-locity 2.0 is a new virtual platform disk optimizer designed to deliver invisible background optimization of all Windows® Guest operating systems running on the VMware ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V™ platforms. New to V-locity 2.0 is the addition of the breakthrough IntelliWrite™ fragmentation prevention technology originally introduced with Diskeeper® performance software. Utilizing IntelliWrite technology, V-locity writes files to the disk to prevent up to 85 percent of fragmentation from occurring before it even happens.

V-locity was made to create a virtual-specific product that not only performs defragmentation functions, but also synchronizes the complex and ongoing activity between host and multiple guest operating systems in a virtualized environment, even when configured on high-powered host systems with data stored in SAN environments.

“We deployed V-locity very shortly after deploying our virtual infrastructure, so there wasn’t much time for bottlenecks to develop. We run V-locity on every Hyper-V virtual machine. We did that mostly just to avoid the double defragmentation that can happen with virtual hard disks. We’ve also got it on a physical Exchange hub transport server (and another one that is virtual) mostly to keep the log files intact. The e-mail data is only on the hub transport servers temporarily during transit, but the log files change constantly. It’s also on the Exchange mailbox server to defragment about eight stores, almost all being over 100GB, and our main file share cluster. Both of those servers store their data on an HP SAN,” stated Eric Johnson from a Construction Industry site.

“V-locity software is absolutely transparent on our virtual SAN systems; it just works,” said Richard Webb of Sustainable Evolution, Inc. of Lynnwood, Washington. “The V-locity product really takes care of the fragmentation on the host and VMs automatically, without the need of manual intersession or overhead of creating scripts and jobs,” Webb said. “The central reporting and configuration management really facilitates ease of management and metric transparency.”

“We have V-locity installed and it is working out great. We are running V-locity on our SAN as all of our Hyper-V guests are stored on the SAN. The fact that the cores somehow communicate to not kill disk performance by all running at the same time is great. Performance seems to be better also. It is easy to manage with the Diskeeper Administrator. This allows us to manage our Diskeeper and V-locity installations all from one console,” reported Mike Linkey, Illinois Commerce Commission

“The need for defragmentation is especially acute in virtual environments,” said Michael Materie, Product Management Director, Diskeeper Corporation. “Because physical hardware in a virtualized storage environment must support more operating systems and can undergo even more disk access and more stress than in a non-virtualized environment, fragmentation of these unique environments requires a specialized approach. With V-locity 2.0, users can realize the benefits of full virtual efficiency.”
