SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Southern States University (SSU), a private school with six campuses in Southern California and over 650 active students from more than 25 countries, has been awarded its initial grant of national accreditation.
The recognition, which was bestowed by the Accrediting Council of Independent Colleges and Schools, means the school (www.ssu-us.org) and its faculty have met or exceeded a rigorous set of educational standards.
Robert Tepper, Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer at SSU, noted that obtaining national accreditation has been “a challenging, and rewarding process for the faculty, administration and the students.
“Our mission at SSU is to provide a solid, high quality business education at an affordable price,” Tepper said. “We have worked hard for the past four years to become worthy of accreditation, and it is a wonderful achievement to have reached this plateau. Going forward, our focus will be to continuously improve every aspect of the University, which ultimately is what accreditation is all about.”
Even before accreditation, Southern States University held a strong attraction to would-be students because of its concentration in business education and its affordable price. Its Bachelor and Master of Business Administration programs offer a combination of solid business fundamentals, which allow students to typically join existing companies or start their own businesses upon graduation. Combine that with tuition prices – approximately $11,000 for the complete program -- that are competitive with state schools, and it is easy to see why enrollment at the University has been steadily climbing.
Tepper expects that trend to continue, since the accreditation means that SSU can now begin the process of applying to accept Title IV financial aid. However, Tepper is not sure how quickly the school will move in this direction, with the current scandals that are in the headlines regarding financial aid abuse. “Our model is to allow students to pay as they go, by month or by quarter, for as little as $350 per month if they qualify for the University’s own financing plan. We prefer to maintain this model so long as practical, meaning so long as we can meet our growth plans without it.”
“Our experience in helping students earn an affordable business degree at SSU has been a remarkable success,” said John Tucker, Chief Academic Officer. “Our growth to date has been based primarily on students recommending our program to their friends. Until now our students were willing to take a chance coming to SSU while the school was not yet accredited in order to get an affordable business education. Now that we have National Accreditation we expect to see a significant increase in the applicant pool, even without accepting financial aid. Our faculty, the majority of which hold PhD degrees, also deserves credit for partnering with each of these students to ensure that they are prepared for success upon graduation.”
