Seattle Works and Point B Join Forces to Launch HandsOn Leadership Volunteer Training

Skills-Based Volunteer Program Places Emerging Business Leaders with Local Nonprofits to Enact Change and Improve Community

SEATTLE--()--Seattle Works, a non-profit service organization, and Point B, an employee-owned management-consulting firm, today announced the launch of HandsOn Leadership, a skills-based volunteer program that links emerging business leaders with local nonprofits. The program targets mid-level corporate employees in the Seattle area who are seeking to improve their leadership skills and advance their careers while donating their time to select community groups.

“HandsOn Leadership is a natural extension of Seattle Works’ ongoing efforts to connect volunteers, develop emerging leaders and inspire dialogue about the needs of our community,” said Tara Smith, interim executive director of Seattle Works. “HandsOn Leadership equips volunteers with the knowledge and tools to be effective community leaders. These skills are transferable beyond volunteer projects to help individuals expand their leadership in both their work and personal lives.”

The inaugural class of HandsOn Leadership completed a series of training seminars during three after-work sessions in June and July 2010. Seattle Works partnered with Seattle-based Point B to develop the program content with a focus on project leadership, resource management, community engagement and personal reflection. Employees from a range of Seattle-area businesses, such as Microsoft, Safeco, YWCA and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, participated in this first class of HandsOn Leadership.

“HandsOn Leadership recognizes that individuals have more to contribute than simply their time,” said Ben Burke, Senior Director of Point B. “Point B looks forward to an ongoing partnership with Seattle Works to help deploy the talent in our city and build the next generation of community leaders.”

Program participants will apply lessons learned from the HandsOn Leadership seminars through a series of volunteer projects to benefit select nonprofit groups in the Seattle community. The first round of volunteer projects is scheduled for completion in September 2010. “Seattle Works continues as a leader in channeling volunteer talent to area nonprofits,” said Sergey Smirnov, advancement associate at the Hamlin Robinson School, a project host for the first class of the HandsOn Leadership program. “HandsOn Leadership is an essential program to expand volunteerism in our community and ensure that nonprofits are fully leveraging volunteer talent.”

HandsOn Leadership builds on the citywide commitment to improve community volunteerism as demonstrated by the recent launch of Engage Seattle and the Cities of Service initiative. Washington state was also recently recognized by the Corporation for National and Community Service with one of 19 grants from the Volunteer Generation Fund to better recruit, manage and retain volunteers to address pressing social challenges.

On Oct. 16, Seattle Works will host its annual gala, Emerald City Swank, at the Seattle Waterfront Marriott. Swank features a raffle, silent and live auctions, dinner and dancing. The event benefits the volunteer and training programs offered by Seattle Works. For more information, visit http://www.seattleworks.org/HomePage/index.php/Swank/swank_intro.html.
