CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A lawsuit filed by Fox & Fox, S.C. on July 6th against Evanston Hospital and Aramark Services alleges that both entities, as “joint employers” of Ms. Yaffa Washington, an on-site food services worker allowed co-workers to repeatedly harass, insult and discriminate against her, despite her numerous complaints to management and pleas for help and protection. Ms. Washington, an African American, is a member of the Hebrew Israelite sect.
Ms. Washington was hired by Evanston Hospital in 2004 and soon thereafter began working for Aramark Services, on location at the hospital, thereby placing her under the supervision, authority and control of both entities. Ms. Washington, who was born in Israel and practices Judaism, alleges that she was subjected to a series of unwelcome, humiliating and offensive racist and anti-Semitic slurs by co-workers, including references to her as the “Jew Girl.” *
Ms. Washington also alleges in her suit that she was falsely accused of “not believing in God,” was physically assaulted at work, and was the target of open and egregious harassment on hospital premises. Not only did Ms. Washington repeatedly complain to Aramark officials about the harassment, but conditions were so bad that a fellow co-worker also made complaints about the harassment to Aramark management, all to no avail.
Soon after informing Aramark officials that she was contemplating filing an EEOC charge if the harassment didn’t stop, in what her suit describes as “unlawful retaliation against her for engaging in legally protected activity,” Ms. Washington was terminated.
“It’s a sad comment that highly regarded entities such as Evanston Hospital and Aramark, seemingly tolerate such misconduct and racism in this day and age. This hurts not just Ms. Washington, but the community in general,” observes Attorney Robb Stokar, Of Counsel, at the Law Offices of Joshua N. Karmel, serving as co-counsel with the law firm of Fox & Fox, S.C. for Ms. Washington.
The suit was filed in the federal district court for Northern District of Illinois.
