Lerner Publishing Group Acquires Darby Creek Publishing

MINNEAPOLIS--()--Lerner Publishing Group announced today the acquisition of Darby Creek Publishing, effective January 1, 2010. Darby Creek will operate as an imprint of Lerner Publishing Group. Lerner Publishing Group purchased Darby Creek Publishing from Media Source, the parent company of Junior Library Guild and The Horn Book. The imprint will add approximately 58 titles to the Lerner Publishing Group list, bringing the total number of books in print to nearly 5000.

Established in 2002, Darby Creek, located in Columbus, Ohio, publishes K–12 fiction and nonfiction titles for the school and public library markets, as well as for the trade bookstore market. Darby Creek is the publisher of such bestselling authors as Lurlene McDaniel, David Lubar, and Joseph Bruchac and produces top-quality children’s books that appeal to all young people, especially reluctant readers.

“Darby Creek’s top trade authors, outstanding children’s fiction and nonfiction, and bestselling books compliment our large portfolio of titles for the school, library, and trade markets,” said Adam Lerner, president and publisher of Lerner Publishing Group. “With this acquisition we plan to add new authors and illustrators to an already impressive line and continue to grow as one of the country’s leading independent children’s book publishers.”

“Lerner Publishing Group has distributed Darby Creek titles since 2003,” said Randy Asmo, publisher of Darby Creek Publishing. “Based on the sales and success our books have had with Lerner Publishing Group it seemed like a natural fit to partner with Lerner when it came to the sale of Darby Creek.”

Plans for the Darby Creek imprint include Night Fall™, a new six-book series of high-interest contemporary horror fiction in Fall 2010 and further expansion in a number of genre fiction categories for young readers.

Lerner Publishing Group will operate the Darby Creek editorial office, book manufacturing, sales, and marketing through its Minneapolis, Minn. headquarters. Its distribution center will immediately assume all order processing, warehousing, fulfillment, billing, customer service, and credit and collection for Darby Creek’s front and backlist titles.
