BERLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The BIOTRONIK team around Dr. Hans-Jürgen Wildau was nominated for the “Deutscher Zukunftspreis” an award conferred by the German Federal President for achievements in technology and innovation. This prize is considered the most important national award for scientific and technological innovations which have already proven themselves on the market. The selection of nominees honors the creative contribution made by their scientists and developers to the technological standard of German industry, to the generation of jobs and to the economic vitality of the country. German Federal President Horst Köhler will present the winner of the “Deutscher Zukunftspreis” on December 2, 2009.
Messages Straight from the Heart – BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring® for Trendsetting Pacemaker Therapy
The innovative BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring® system utilizes the benefits of Internet and cellular network technology especially for patients with pacemakers or implantable defibrillators (ICDs). A mobile device similar to a cell phone automatically transmits health and technical data from the implant at regular intervals. This gives the attending physician seamless, up-to-date information about the course of therapy and potential health risks. The physician can keep an eye on his or her patients over a secure Internet platform, even long after they have left the clinic. This does not require any patient interaction.
BIOTRONIK, a pioneer in the field of telecardiology, has advanced the concept of online patient follow-ups and developed it through several technological steps into a globally certified medical device system. BIOTRONIK has evaluated the therapeutic and economic benefits in close cooperation with cardiologists. The reliable transfer of patient data around the world must of course be guaranteed. To this end, BIOTRONIK collaborates with T-Mobile worldwide and utilizes its exceptionally high-quality and reliable cellular networks.
“When we began the project some years ago, terms such as telecardiology or Home Monitoring sounded like dreams of the future,” commented Dr. Hans-Jürgen Wildau, BIOTRONIK Vice President of Health Services, the nomination. “But we were certain that this new type of diagnostics and therapy would be well received by physicians and patients alike. It became clear that the concept had serious market potential once our international competitors followed suit and tried to catch up with our technology. It was a long way from the very first prototype through to the current online service which operates worldwide. This nomination for the “Deutscher Zukunftspreis” will be much appreciated by those who accompanied and supported us along the way, as well as by the whole BIOTRONIK team.”
Quality of Life through Pioneering Technology – Growth through Innovation
As clinical studies have shown, both physicians and patients benefit enormously from the peace of mind provided by continuous remote diagnostics and the individual therapy adjustments it enables. Patients also report a significant improvement in their quality of life. Furthermore, automatic remote follow-ups reduce the workload in the health care sector. BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring® reduces the number of physician consultations in often overburdened cardiology centers without negatively impacting the quality of care or safety. Physicians and nurses benefit from reduced workloads for routine cases, which allows them to afford greater attention to patients who urgently require a consultation for diagnostics and treatment.
BIOTRONIK not only identified the potential of telecardiology early on, it was also a pioneer in successfully implementing the technology and bringing it successfully to the market. This technology is now used in 55 countries around the world. 200,000 BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring® devices have already been implanted, and more than 3,500 clinics are actively using the remote monitoring function. BIOTRONIK, founded more than 40 years ago by Prof. Dr. Max Schaldach, the inventor of the first German pacemaker, is expanding due to increasing market demand. The company is significantly expanding its workforce and production capacity at its Berlin headquarters, where 2,000 of its 4,900 employees worldwide are based.
