TAMPA, Fla.--()--McNICHOLS Company announced today that its pultruded fiberglass grating has been tested and meets the requirements for field fabricated drain systems as required by the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGB).

The federal mandate, effective on December 19, 2008, was enacted to ensure public safety in water parks, lazy rivers, swimming pools, and spas by requiring use of equipment that protects against entrapment and evisceration.

The ASME/ANSI standard establishes materials and testing requirements for drain systems including suction fittings in swimming pools, wading pools, spas, hot tubs and other aquatic facilities.

An independent testing lab found that McNICHOLS fiberglass grating − McNICHOLS® MS I-4010 and I-4015 − exceeds the ASME A112.19.8a-2008 requirements for tensile and impact strength after being subjected to UV radiation tests. The products, ideal as drain covers, have a 40% open area and bar spacing of .40 inches.

Pool drain systems suited for McNICHOLS® MS I-4010 and I-4015 are water parks, lazy rivers, hotels, schools and other public facilities. A third product, McNICHOLS® T-1810, is available for a pool’s “above waterline” walk area, a popular feature in large pools. All three materials are held in place by McNICHOLS Stainless Steel 316 Hold Down fasteners.

In addition to meeting UV strength and opening size requirements, the products are non-corrosive; require no electrical bonding; have superior corrosion resistance and can be cut-to-size to fit unique drain shapes and sizes.

The products are manufactured with an I Bar configuration and a fine grit top surface. A protective synthetic veil covers the exterior of the load bearing bars, allowing the I Bar to withstand constant exposure to UV and chlorinated water while maintaining its strength and stiffness.

McNICHOLS Co., headquartered in Tampa, Florida provides perforated and expanded metal, wire cloth and all types of grating and flooring to customers worldwide. The company serves numerous industries from 24 locations throughout the United States, including 17 service centers and 7 field offices. McNICHOLS maintains the ISO 9001:2000 quality standard for its domestic service centers.
