RedBrick Health Helps Ridgeview Medical Center Reduce Employee Risk for Major Health Conditions by 20 Percent in One Year

Ridgeview on track to reduce health expenditures 10 percent by end of 2010

MINNEAPOLIS--()--RedBrick Health today announced its client Ridgeview Medical Center reduced employee risk for major health conditions -- including heart disease, diabetes and cancer -- by 20 percent just one year after implementing RedBrick’s Health EarningsTM System.

“Where traditional wellness and incentive programs have failed, RedBrick Health engages employees on an in-depth personal level and directly ties healthy behaviors to meaningful reductions in personal health care costs,” said Robert Stevens, president and chief executive officer of Ridgeview Medical Center. “The adoption of RedBrick Health and the dedication of our employees and their families puts us squarely on track to achieve our goal to be the healthiest employer in Minnesota and reduce health care expenditures 10 percent by the end of 2010.”

“I recently went through my second RedBrick health screening last fall, and my cholesterol levels and blood pressure were down compared to the previous year,” said Ray Rindahl, technology coordinator and pharmacist at Ridgeview Medical Center. “With RedBrick Health, I have made the lifestyle, exercise and dietary changes necessary to improve my health, and those changes have become a normal part of my life.”

Healthy behaviors, such as those exhibited by Rindahl, allowed Ridgeview employees participating with RedBrick Health to earn insurance premium reductions from their employer in 2009. The year-over-year health improvements at Ridgeview Medical Center translate to more than $185 per Ridgeview employee in estimated medical and productivity savings for the organization.

RedBrick Health brings greater accountability to health care through its Health Earnings System, which re-aligns health care financing by directly linking individual costs to individual behaviors. RedBrick Health makes it easy for consumers to engage in healthy behaviors and earn personal and financial rewards through a single, integrated Health Earnings System that delivers tailored health programs, advocacy services and benefit plan assistance.

Year One Health Improvement Data

Nearly 60 percent of Ridgeview employees have participated in RedBrick health assessments and programs. RedBrick Health’s Personal HealthMapSM and coordinating health and wellness coaching programs for chronic condition management, stress, nutrition, physical activity, insomnia and others have directly resulted in healthier employees.

Specific first-year health improvements across the participating population include:

  • 20 percent reduced risk for heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cancer.
  • 10 percent decrease in individuals who smoke.
  • 5 percent reduction in overweight or obese employees.

Year-over-year same participant results include:

  • 16 percent fewer participants at risk for lack of physical activity (exercise at least five days a week for 30 minutes).
  • 8 percent fewer participants at risk for poor nutrition (eating fruits and vegetables at least five servings a day).
  • 30 percent fewer participants with total cholesterol risk (average total cholesterol values dropping from 202 mg/dL to 186 mg/dL).
  • 13 percent less participants at risk for high blood pressure (average decrease in blood pressure values from 123/80 to 118/78).

“The benefits RedBrick Health delivered to our employees and organization in one year are impressive,” said Stevens. “We are really starting to ‘move the needle’ when it comes to health and wellness, and look for even greater successes in year two.”

“Behavior change in health care doesn’t come easily, but early RedBrick Health results from Ridgeview demonstrate it can be accomplished,” said Kyle Rolfing, co-founder and chief executive officer of RedBrick Health. “Our Health Earnings model is returning positive outcomes yet to be seen in health, wellness and health care cost control.”
