WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Schafer Corporation, a leading provider of scientific, engineering, systems integration, programmatic support, and technical solutions to government clientele, has announced that Lieutenant General Henry A. “Trey” Obering III (USAF, retired) has joined the firm’s Board of Directors.
Prior to joining Schafer Corporation, General Obering served as Director of the Missile Defense Agency (“MDA”), part of the Office of the Secretary of Defense. The MDA is Presidentially-chartered and mandated by Congress to acquire highly effective ballistic missile defense systems for forward deployed and expeditionary elements of the U.S. Armed Forces. The MDA’s mission is to develop and deploy an integrated, layered ballistic missile defense system capable of protecting the United States and its allies against all ranges of missiles in all phases of their flight. As Director, General Obering was the Acquisition Executive in charge of all ballistic missile defense systems and programs.
A native of Birmingham, Alabama, General Obering entered the Air Force in 1973 after completing the University of Notre Dame’s ROTC program as a distinguished graduate. He received his pilot wings in 1975 and flew operational assignments in the F-4E. He was later assigned to the Space Shuttle Program and participated in 15 space shuttle launches as a NASA orbiter project engineer and was responsible for integrating firing room launch operations. Other prior assignments include tours with the Air Force Inspector General, the Defense Mapping Agency, and Electronic Systems Center. Prior to his assignment at MDA, General Obering planned and programmed 68 joint, Air Force, and international programs, including Global Hawk and Predator, with a $28 billion budget as Mission Area Director for Information Dominance on the Air Staff.
“During his 35 years of dedicated military service,” said John Garcia, CEO of Schafer Corporation, “General Obering became one of the foremost experts and leading voices on missile defense, including providing support for some of the most highly sophisticated technology programs within the military services. His insights and guidance will be invaluable as Schafer strives to help customers fulfill complex and important mission requirements in related sectors.”
“We are excited to welcome General Obering to our Board of Directors,” said Jeff Siegal, Managing Director of Metalmark Capital. “We believe that his talents and expertise will be complementary to an exceptional Board of Directors and management team, as the Company considers, develops, and executes its strategic objectives.”
Schafer Corporation announced a majority investment by Metalmark Capital, a New York-based private equity firm on December 22, 2008. In addition to John Garcia, the Chief Executive Officer since 2000, Lawrence (“Larry”) Delaney and John Gilligan joined the Board of Directors as Chairman and Vice Chairman, respectively. Dr. Delaney was formerly Chief Operating Officer of Titan Corporation and Acting Secretary, Assistant Secretary for Acquisition, and Chief Information Officer (“CIO”) of the US Air Force. Mr. Gilligan was formerly Senior Vice President and Director of the Defense Sector at SRA International and CIO of the US Air Force and Department of Energy.
