ATLANTA, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--TANDBERG Television, part of the Ericsson Group, will be awarded a Technical and Engineering Emmy® Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for its OpenStream® Digital Services Platform, in recognition of the platform’s pivotal role in driving the growth of video-on-demand (VOD) television services.
The award for the “Development, productization, and commercialization of interactive Video-on-Demand (VOD) two-way infrastructure and signaling, leading to large scale VOD implementations" will be formally presented to TANDBERG Television at a ceremony held during the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Las Vegas, on January 7, 2008.
The TANDBERG OpenStream platform has enabled the rapid deployment of VOD and the realization of commercial on-demand business models through its ability to allow service providers to easily deploy open VOD architectures. This enables operators to accelerate time to market of new services by using best-in-class VOD servers, applications, billing systems and other system components, avoiding single vendor lock-in which hampers flexibility and growth. OpenStream's unique, open architecture extends the head-end beyond VOD to support television's next generation of interactive services. The OpenStream platform has been widely deployed by all major North American cable operators since its introduction in 2002 and is now being used by operators in Asia and in Europe such as Oriental Cable Network (OCN) in China and UPC in the Netherlands.
“We are proud that the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has recognized the central role that OpenStream has played in the introduction of on-demand television,” said Eric Cooney, President and CEO of TANDBERG Television. “VOD gives service providers the competitive advantage of offering TV subscribers high levels of consumer satisfaction and unparalleled control over watching their favorite TV programs. With OpenStream, operators can rapidly deploy new consumer applications such as ‘start-over’ and network PVR, with a cost-effective, flexible and scaleable open VOD platform.”
More than 80 percent of all on-demand content seen by U.S. cable subscribers is made possible by TANDBERG On-Demand Solutions. Top five US operators who have publicly announced large scale deployments of the OpenStream platform include Charter Communications and Time Warner Cable. OpenStream was also selected as the platform of choice for the small to mid-size market by the National Cable Television Cooperative (NCTC), which represents over 1,000 independent cable operators serving more than 14 million subscribers nationwide.
The Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards honor achievements in two areas: Science Engineering & Technology for Broadcast Television, which includes broadcast, cable and satellite distribution and Broadband and Personal Television encompassing interactive television, gaming technology, the Internet, cell phone, private networks, and personal media players. A blue ribbon panel of industry professionals reviews and recommends technologies and potential awardees.
