Devicescape and LVL7 Collaborate on Breakthrough ''Unified'' Access Point for WLAN Switch Networks; Unique Product Addresses Wireless + Wireline Switching Market Convergence

Interop Las Vegas 2006
SAN BRUNO, Calif. & RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.--()--May 1, 2006--Devicescape Software and LVL7 Systems, Inc. today announced a strategic agreement between the two companies which resulted in a breakthrough unified access point (AP) for LVL7's new FASTPATH(R) Wireless LAN software solution. LVL7 leveraged Devicescape's Wireless Infrastructure Platform (WIP) for the wireless capabilities built within its new AP software product. This collaboration strengthens LVL7's comprehensive, low cost wireless + wireline switching solution.

"By leveraging Devicescape's innovative technology, LVL7 was able to create a unique and highly-differentiated WLAN access point offering for the OEM community," said Dave King, vice president of marketing and strategy at LVL7 Systems. "LVL7's unified access point is a strong complement to our FASTPATH WLAN switching software, and the combination represents an unbeatable enterprise solution that unifies the wireless + wireline switching domains."

Based on the combined technologies and software development expertise of both companies, LVL7's WLAN software solution enables OEMs to quickly build unified access points that can operate as either a traditional stand-alone AP, or as a switch-controlled AP. For manufacturers, this dual function capability can reduce both development plans and inventory requirements to a single product.

Similarly, enterprise operations can simplify deployment plans by relying on one AP for both switch-controlled and stand-alone environments, making "always on" connectivity a reality for end-users. In a switch-controlled network, if the switch fails, the unified WLAN AP software retains the wireless connection by changing over to stand-alone mode.

The demand for wireless connectivity is on the rise and businesses are seeking wireless solutions that help increase productivity and responsiveness. In fact, end-user spending in the enterprise-class market will increase at a compound annual growth rate of 12 percent from 2006 through 2009 to $1.6 billion. Wireless switches/controllers will account for 31 percent of that amount (Gartner, Forecast: Wireless LAN Equipment, Worldwide, 2002 - 2009). Additionally, the proliferation of mobile devices in the workplace is forcing organizations to move towards an integrated wireless and wireline infrastructure strategy.

"End-users want simple wireless solutions that work without failure. Devicescape's collaboration with LVL7 enables OEMs to deliver enterprise products that make always-on, wireless connectivity a reality," said Glenn Flinchbaugh, vice president of marketing at Devicescape. "In addition, this relationship marks an important milestone in Devicescape's position as a wireless market leader because we are the underpinning wireless technology for LVL7's breakthrough AP software products that will have broad reaching impact across the enterprise."

Devicescape's WIP is a comprehensive access point software solution that underpins LVL7's unified access point. Devicescape's WIP provides extensive enterprise-class access point features, including full SNMP management, WPA2 enterprise security, multiple wireless networks, and Spectralink Voice Priority support, enabling OEMs to deliver a competitive, state-of-the-art product to market faster.

With FASTPATH WLAN software, LVL7 is extending its enterprise value proposition to the wireless marketplace. FASTPATH WLAN software leverages many of the key attributes of the current FASTPATH Ethernet product portfolio, and adds new capabilities -- like stackable WLAN switches and unified access points -- that deliver a compelling wireless business case for OEMs and their enterprise customers.

LVL7's FASTPATH WLAN switching and access point software solutions will be generally available this quarter and are currently being demonstrated at the Interop trade show.
