Northern California Ernst & Young honored Mr. Siebel as the recipient of its most prestigious award of "Master Entrepreneur" for founding and managing one of the most successful software companies in history and pioneering the customer relationship management (CRM) market, the largest segment of the enterprise applications industry. Ernst & Young selects only one executive from among 35 Entrepreneur of the Year award finalists from a wide variety of industries throughout Northern California for this special recognition. The judging criteria stipulate that the "Master Entrepreneur" honoree must have successfully demonstrated:
-- Ability to maintain management excellence -- including financial performance, continuity of management team's focus, and evidence of sustained improvement or innovation in the way business is conducted--over a sustained period of time
-- Evidence of sound management practices in critical areas of the company, including finance, marketing, human resources, and/or sales
-- Indication of continued generation of original, imaginative, or innovative programs in sales and marketing, human resources, financial management, office management, and product development.
-- Evidence of high company values and strong relationships with employees, customers, suppliers, and shareholders
-- Business founded more than five years ago
-- The honoree must be primarily responsible for the longer-term growth of the company

At the awards banquet, Ernst & Young credited Mr. Siebel's successful management of the company through periods of tremendous growth, its focus on building a company with lasting values, and the Siebel corporate culture's unwavering focus on customer satisfaction. These achievements have translated into real shareholder benefits -- Siebel Systems' stock has returned close to 900 percent to its public shareholders since the company's IPO in 1996, generating $5.1 billion in market capitalization. In its tenth year, Siebel Systems has become the largest enterprise applications software company in the United States and the second-largest in the world.
