Washington Gas Recognizes Environmental Sustainability Achievements
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Having just been certified as one of the area’s “greenest” companies by the Sustainable Business Network of Washington (SBNOW), Washington Gas continued its commitment to the environment and embraced the spirit of Earth Day by hosting two special events for its employees. Held on April 21 at the company’s corporate headquarters in Washington, D.C., and on April 23 at its Springfield, Va., Operations Center, the events provided employees with a better understanding of the company’s new environmental sustainability initiative. Demonstrations and tips on how they can conserve resources and reduce their carbon footprint at home and at work were available.
“With these events and moving forward, we are thrilled to extend our company’s commitment to sustainability beyond our offices and into the homes of our dedicated employees” said Melissa Adams, Division Head, Sustainability and Business Development at Washington Gas. “We strive to be responsible environmental stewards as we deliver the products and services that meet our customers’ energy needs. We use resources efficiently in our business processes and encourage our employees and customers to do the same.”
Representatives from the non-profit organizations EarthShare, DC Surfriders, Defenders of Wildlife and the Center for Health, Environment and Justice attended the celebrations and spoke to employees about their respective causes. Representatives from Earth Aid Enterprises provided information about the best energy-saving products and ways to improve efficiency at home.
“We were happy to partner with Washington Gas this Earth Day and look forward to continuing to work with both company and staff to fulfill their sustainability commitments,” said Ben Bixby, Chief Executive Officer of Earth Aid Enterprises.
Anacostia River Clean-up
Earlier in the month, Washington Gas employee volunteers teamed with the Anacostia Watershed Society and participated in the 15th Annual Anacostia River Cleanup and Earth Day Celebration on April 18. The clean-up took place at nearly 30 sites along the Anacostia Watershed in the District of Columbia and Maryland. More than 35 Washington Gas employees, family members and friends helped to remove trash and debris from Bladensburg Waterfront Park in Bladensburg, Md. Their efforts, along with more than 1,900 event volunteers, helped to remove 59 tons of trash, 289 tires and 10,700 plastic bags. Washington Gas was a corporate sponsor of the event.
Headquartered in Washington, D.C., Washington Gas is a wholly-owned subsidiary of WGL Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:WGL). The parent company holds a group of energy-related retail businesses that focus primarily on retail energy-marketing and commercial heating, ventilating and air conditioning services.
