Washington Gas Employees Raise More Than $21,000 for Junior Achievement of the National Capital Area
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Washington Gas employees, along with their families and friends, helped raise more than $21,000 in donations over the past year for Junior Achievement of the National Capital Area, the largest amount raised by Washington Gas employees since the company began Junior Achievement fundraising in 1998.
“Washington Gas has been a part of Junior Achievement programs since 1998. We share the important goal of preparing our region's students to become future business leaders”
On March 28, twenty Washington Gas teams, with 91 participants, donned bowling shoes and hit the lanes to take part in Junior Achievement’s Rock & Roll Bowl-A-Thon in Springfield, Va. A longtime supporter of Junior Achievement, Washington Gas was a Platinum Sponsor of the event, contributing corporate funds in addition to the more than $21,000 raised by the company bowling teams.
Washington Gas employees also raised money for Junior Achievement through a chili cook-off, bake sale, raffles and individual donations.
"Washington Gas has been a part of Junior Achievement programs since 1998. We share the important goal of preparing our region's students to become future business leaders,” said Roberta W. Sims, vice president of corporate relations at Washington Gas. “Our employees enjoy participating in fun activities such as the Bowl-A-Thon and creative opportunities like JA in a Day. We are proud to be associated with such an excellent organization."
More than 55 Washington Gas employees shared their time and professional experience with the students of Pine Spring Elementary School in Falls Church, Va., as volunteers in a Junior Achievement program called “JA in a Day” held on Friday, March 27. The employee volunteers taught 510 students in classes ranging from kindergarten to the sixth grade.
Employee volunteers followed a curriculum created by Junior Achievement, teaching younger students basic concepts about money, rewards and savings, and older students about international trade and the global economy. During recess periods, a Washington Gas field operations team performed demonstrations teaching the students about natural gas safety.
“Washington Gas employees continue to surpass our expectations. These dedicated volunteers are committed to serving the community and helping local students by supporting Junior Achievement's programs," stated Edward J. Grenier III, Junior Achievement’s president and chief executive officer.
Washington Gas is a proud supporter of Junior Achievement of the National Capital Area and its goal of inspiring and preparing young people to succeed in a global economy.
