Teradyne`s MicroWAVE6000 Instrumentation Suite Selected by Alcatel for Bluetooth Wireless Chip Testing

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 3, 2000--Teradyne, Inc. (NYSE:TER) announced today that Alcatel has selected Teradyne's MicroWAVE6000(TM) instrumentation suite to test its Bluetooth(TM) wireless chips. Alcatel, a leading manufacturer of mixed-signal ICs for telecom and ASICs for automotive, currently houses a growing Catalyst SOC installed base at its chip manufacturing plant in Oudenaarde, Belgium. For the production of its very innovative Bluetooth single chip solution, Alcatel is currently configuring several SOC systems with the microwave instrumentation to greatly enhance its ability to produce Bluetooth wireless chips using Teradyne's Catalyst quad-site test capabilities.

Peter Crabbe, Test Engineering Manager at Alcatel's fab in Oudenaarde, said: "We selected Teradyne's MicroWAVE6000 instrumentation suite because it provides the RF test capabilities we require to test our Bluetooth wireless chips. We have been successfully utilizing MicroWAVE6000 instrumentation for more than a year now and are pleased with the powerful test coverage it provided us during pilot production of our complex wireless devices."

David Derian, Wireless Applications Manager at Teradyne, added, "Alcatel recognizes how rapidly the communications market is evolving and the importance of meeting the standards set forth by the variety of new communications devices coming to market today and tomorrow. We are pleased to deliver a third generation of testing instrumentation for wireless and in particular quad-site testing of Bluetooth chips."

About Alcatel

Alcatel builds next generation networks, delivering integrated end-to-end voice and data communications solutions to established and new carriers, as well as enterprises and consumers worldwide. With 120,000 employees and sales of EURO 21.3 billion ($ 25 billion), Alcatel operates in more than 130 countries. Bluetooth is a technology specification for small form factor, low-cost, short-range radio links between mobile PCs, mobile phones and other portable devices. Alcatel's single chip Bluetooth solution, announced at CeBIT earlier this year, is a compact and complete solution that is easy to integrate. In the not too distant future, Bluetooth products will enable users to use their cellular phones to read e-mail that has been remotely downloaded from their laptops. It will also allow for the exchange of computer files between laptops, without the need for cables.

About MicroWAVE6000

The MicroWAVE6000 instrumentation suite provides a complete range of RF/microwave test capability required for current and future wireless devices and communications standards. MicroWAVE6000 includes full 6 GHz source, measure, and vector network analysis (VNA) capability, complete 12-term error correction, and graphical-user interface (GUI) based test templates for programming ease-of-use plus options, including: modulation to 2.7 GHz, up to 16 RF pins, noise figure test option, and phase noise test option.

Fully integrated within Catalyst and A5 test systems, MicroWAVE6000 is the only RF/microwave instrumentation available that also allows for complete system configuration flexibility for today's high-volume production environment. Catalyst and A5 systems can either be configured as focused RF test solutions, with ample room for further instrument expansion, or as complete wireless SOC test solutions by augmenting MicroWAVE6000 with the full complement of Teradyne's mixed-signal AC, DC, and digital instrumentation. In addition, MicroWAVE6000 instrumentation can be added easily to Catalyst and A5 installed systems.
