Pacer Stacktrain Named Best Intermodal Service Provider
Logistics Management, published by Reed Business Information, New York, conducts the annual survey of transportation and logistics users, called "Quest for Quality". Pacer Stacktrain is the principal wholesale arm of Pacer International, Inc. (Nasdaq:PACR), a non-asset based North American third-party logistics and freight transportation provider.
"Pacer Stacktrain's selection as the best intermodal service provider was based on its high rankings for each of five key quality criteria," according to Mike Levans, chief editor of Logistics Management. "These criteria include on-time performance, value, information technology, customer service, and equipment and operations."
Commented Tom Shurstad, Pacer Stacktain's president: "Pacer Stacktrain's overall ranking was significantly higher than that of the second-ranked competitor and also significantly above the average for all intermodal providers. This result is consistent with our ongoing commitment to be the best-of-class provider."
He added: "In a period that has been marked by rail congestion and ongoing rail service issues, it is especially gratifying to be performing at higher standards of on-time reliability than even the railroads that provide the underlying carriage.
"Customers using Pacer Stacktrain tell us that our cross-country transit time has been measured, on average, as one and a half days faster than regular rail service. This is because we maintain personnel throughout our network specifically to facilitate rail connections and to expedite the loading and unloading of our customers' containers."
Pacer Stacktrain is currently commemorating the 20th anniversary of the introduction of double-stack rail technology. "Since 1984, double-stack technology has changed the way both domestic and international containers have been transported across North America, making containerized shipments more cost-efficient, reliable, smooth, and secure," said Shurstad. "We have expanded the system's capacity and added new routes, including innovative cross-border services for freight movements to and from Mexico, and we will continue to improve Pacer Stacktrain in the future," said Shurstad.
About "Intermodal" -- "Intermodal" refers to the movement of a unit of freight, such as a 40-, 45- or 53-foot container, by more than one mode of conveyance, e.g., by rail, and/or by truck, and/or by containership. Prior to the advent of "Stacktrain technology" in 1984, containers moving intermodally by rail were hauled on conventional flat cars, rather than stacked one atop another on specially designed, more fuel-efficient railcars.
About Pacer Stacktrain -- Based in Concord, California, Pacer Stacktrain provides wholesale double-stack rail services (cost-efficient, two-tiered rail transportation for containerized shipments) and cartage (local trucking) services.
