Olympic Champion Mark Spitz to Speak on USS Midway

At “Celebrating the Athlete in All of Us” Event, Spitz to Recognize 2009 Senior Games Medalists and Encourage Living Healthy at Any Age

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In celebration of lifelong health and wellness, special guest and U.S. Olympic gold medalist Mark Spitz will join Humana MarketPOINT Senior Products and the Healthways SilverSneakers® Fitness Program in recognizing national and state Senior Games medalists, as well as inspirational SilverSneakers participants.

“We are honored and proud to have Mark Spitz partner with Humana and Healthways in celebrating the accomplishments of these amazing athletes who champion the benefits of adopting a healthy and active lifestyle.”

More than 600 local Senior Games medalists and SilverSneakers participants will attend the event, “Celebrating the Athlete in All of Us,” from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, at The USS Midway Museum, 910 North Harbor Drive. Senior Games medalists include top athletes from the San Diego Senior Olympics and the California Senior Games as well as the 2009 Summer National Senior Games held Aug. 1–15 in Palo Alto, Calif. Humana was the presenting sponsor of the 2009 Summer National Senior Games.

Spitz, who recently overcame his own health issues, will speak about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “It’s never too late to take charge of your health,” Spitz said. “Adopting a healthier lifestyle, especially incorporating regular physical activity, can dramatically improve the quality of a person’s life as well as reduce a person’s risk for most chronic disease.”

Additional highlights of the “Celebrating the Athlete in All of Us” event include:

  • Former San Diego Charger and current San Diego radio personality Billy Ray Smith to emcee the celebration
  • Steve Salmons, middle blocker for the USA Olympic Volleyball Team from 1981-1986 to attend
  • A performance by the U.S. Navy Band
  • Free Admission to the USS Midway aircraft carrier museum

“Athletes like those participating in the Senior Games and SilverSneakers are role models when it comes to healthy aging,” said Russell Barbour, director of MarketPOINT Senior Products for Humana in Southern California. “We are honored and proud to have Mark Spitz partner with Humana and Healthways in celebrating the accomplishments of these amazing athletes who champion the benefits of adopting a healthy and active lifestyle.”
