Eaton Contracted to Boost U.S. Military Electrical System Efficiency

PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced it has received multiple service contracts from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to evaluate electrical systems at U.S. Department of Defense facilities. The projects, which include recommending improvements to conserve resources and developing standardized and simplified designs, have an estimated contract value of $35 million and a completion date in March 2017.

“This initiative will help defense facilities analyze energy usage, improve efficiency and provide insight into cost savings and downtime prevention.”

At diverse locations within the continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, and the U.S. Territories, Eaton will perform detailed investigation and planning and help the military remotely monitor and control equipment meters and systems that would otherwise require periodic visual observation or additional personnel. These efforts will improve the efficiency of utility monitoring and control systems (UMCS), building automation systems (BAS), fire alarm systems, fire protection systems, supervisory control and data acquisition systems, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

“Energy efficiency is directly tied to measuring, monitoring and managing energy usage,” said Paul Cody, vice president and general manager, Electrical Service and Systems Division, Eaton Corporation. “This initiative will help defense facilities analyze energy usage, improve efficiency and provide insight into cost savings and downtime prevention.”

The contracts also include retro-commissioning (RCx) services for UMCS, BAS, HVAC and telecommunications systems, alternative energy systems, electronic security systems, physical security systems, automated control systems, and other electrical and mechanical systems. RCx is a systematic, documented process that identifies low-cost operational and maintenance improvements in existing buildings and typically focuses on energy-using equipment such as mechanical equipment, lighting and related controls and usually optimizes existing system performance, rather than relying on major equipment replacement, typically resulting in improved indoor air quality, comfort, controls, energy and resource efficiency. Eaton’s RCx projects have historically reduced energy costs up to 20 percent and have shown a return on investment in as soon as six months.

The contract is one of several recent agreements that Eaton has reached with government organizations, including $10 million in RCx services for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs medical campuses and $1 million to enhance the electrical safety and reliability of the Federal Aviation Administration headquarters in Washington, D.C.
