FORT ATKINSON, Wis.--()--As Cygnus Business Media looks to transform the business-to-business media industry, the company has just added a new component to its line-up with award-winning designer J-C Suares. Suares has designed, redesigned and consulted on more than 100 national and international titles. He is equally at home with both consumer and trade publications, working on well-known brands including Shape, Fast Company, ESPN, New York, Military History, Variety, Broadcasting & Cable, Publisher's Weekly, 7-Days, INC, and The New York Times Book Review as well as L'Express (France), Flare, Canadian Business and MacLean's (Canada). Several of his publication designs have been nominated or won National Magazine Awards. Suares has also drawn covers for The New Yorker, The Atlantic and Fortune and has illustrated several books including The Babar Baby Book.
“In today’s competitive B2B media environment, it is essential to look at all areas of production”
"Magazines cannot afford to lag behind the state of the art,” says Suares. “Covers need to have impact and should tell the whole story. The headlines should be either very clear or very clever or both. Feature openers should be spectacular and every device from running heads to pull quotes should be used to make the pages interesting.”
In addition to magazine design, Suares has worked with some notable people consulting and directing book design for publishers and editors such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Martha Stewart. He is also the author of several dozen books on cats and dogs. As creative director and vice president of Prentice Hall and Simon & Schuster Reference, he managed his own imprint, Prentice Hall Editions.
Some of his most successful books include The Indispensable Cat, Manhattan, The Art of Gone with the Wind, Russian Houses, The Baseball Hall of Fame Book and American Anthem, co-authored with E.L. Doctorow. Recent single issue publications that Suares conceived include Rodale's Organic Cooking Made Easy, 100 Greatest War Movies (Weider), 100 Greatest Train Movies (Kalmbach), Lincoln in His Own Words (Weider) and George Patton in His Own Words (Weider).
According to Suares another area of design includes cross promotion, “Links to the web should always be present (in print) and web sites should remind people of the print products. You should always be blowing your horn by pointing out exclusives, special reports, special sections and bonuses.”
“In today’s competitive B2B media environment, it is essential to look at all areas of production,” says CEO John French. “We feel fortunate to have an international expert in creative design like J-C join our team.”
Suares will serve as a consultant assuming the role of Creative Director for Cygnus Business Media. He will report directly to CEO John French.
