OMAHA, Neb.--()--Proxibid, the world’s largest provider of live auction webcasting services, today announced that the original marriage certificate issued to Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley sold online for $70,800 during a live auction webcast hosted through its live online bidding platform. Bidding took place during Philip Weiss Auctions’ January 23 auction which included rare books, autographs, and rock and roll and sports memorabilia.
“We chose to bid online because we wanted to bid actively but could not attend the live event. Online bidding was easy and very interactive. We were very excited to be the winning bidder of the Michael Jackson - Lisa Marie Presley marriage certificate.”
“This is a very unique item and is certainly a coup for any serious collector,” said auctioneer Philip Weiss. “The bidding activity on this lot clearly illustrates the power of the Internet in today’s auctions. Bidders do not have to be in the live audience to bid successfully on meaningful pieces.”
The marriage certificate was signed by both Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley on May 26, 1994 in the Dominican Republic, where the couple was married. Married for only a year-and-a-half, the media treated the nuptials as a merger between Graceland and Neverland. For Michael Jackson fans, the marriage certificate is one piece of memorabilia that blends the legacy of the “King of Pop” with that of “The King” himself.
Bidding for the item started at $27,000 and quickly turned into a bidding war between an onsite bidder and the online bidder who won the item. After 20 bids back and forth between the two bidders, the online bidder placed the high winning bid of $70,800.
“My wife and I have been collecting autographs and memorabilia since 1973. Several years ago we were outbid on the marriage certificate signed by Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller and I did not want to miss the chance to own this one,” said the winning bidder. “We chose to bid online because we wanted to bid actively but could not attend the live event. Online bidding was easy and very interactive. We were very excited to be the winning bidder of the Michael Jackson - Lisa Marie Presley marriage certificate.”
Collectors will not want to miss Philip Weiss Auctions’ next live auction webcast, featuring toy trains, which is slated for February 27 at 10:00 a.m. EST. To view the auction catalog, please visit www.proxibid.com/pwauctions.
