Dailymotion Launches Support for Open Video Formats and Video HTML Tag

All Official and Motionmaker videos to be encoded in Ogg

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dailymotion, one of the world's largest video entertainment websites, today announced support of the open video format Ogg and web standards with the help of Mozilla. The first major web video site to incorporate these technologies, Dailymotion is adding support for the new video HTML tag, available with the beta release of Firefox 3.5, and encoding Official and Motionmaker videos in Ogg.

“Dailymotion’s strong support for open video helps move the Web forward.”

The new video tag provides web developer flexibility such as the ability to control and modify videos "on the fly" using web standards like JavaScript and cascading style sheets (CSS). Dailymotion’s new R&D platform at http://openvideo.dailymotion.com will test the video tag in the HTML 5 video player, a replica of the regular Dailymotion video player. A demo can also be found at http://www.dailymotion.com/openvideodemo.

“Our users expect the best possible experience and we are excited to work with Mozilla, with whom we share the commitment to the continuous advancement of innovative Internet-related technologies,” said Sebastien Adgnot, lead developer on open video for Dailymotion.

Dailymotion first began use of Ogg video encoding in conjunction with the One Laptop per Child Foundation’s XO laptop. Dailymotion will have 300,000 Ogg encoded videos by the third quarter of 2009, and will re-encode pre-existing site inventory in the new format.

“Video is a vital part of the online experience. At Mozilla, we view the support of open, non-proprietary video standards as key to the overall health of the Web,” said Paul Kim, VP of Marketing, Mozilla. "Dailymotion’s strong support for open video helps move the Web forward."

A top 50 website worldwide, Dailymotion Network attracts 59 million unique monthly visitors worldwide (source: comScore, April 2009). Every day, over 15,000 new videos are uploaded into Dailymotion's global network of 18 localized video entertainment sites. In March 2009, Dailymotion delivered over 975 million videos to users including curated content from premium and Motionmaker creative contributors. Using the most advanced technology for both users and content creators, Dailymotion provides high-quality and HD video in a fast, easy-to-use website that also automatically filters infringing material notified by content owners. Dailymotion's mission is to provide the best possible entertainment experience for users and the best marketing opportunities for advertisers, while respecting content protection.
