JVI Announces Florida Homeowners Get Another Opportunity for Free Wind Inspections

LAKE MARY, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Central Florida homeowners who were not able to get their free wind mitigation inspections under the My Safe Florida Home Program in 2008 will now have another opportunity, according to JVI.

The program allows for a free wind inspection designed to help Floridians identify how they can strengthen their homes against hurricanes and reduce hurricane damage exposure. The legislature required 400,000 inspections under the program, but there were several thousand cancellations. Many of these initial appointments did not result in a completed inspection. While the program exhausted its funding in 2008, opportunities have led to the opening up of an additional 13,500 wind inspections for single-family, site-built homeowners starting this January. These openings are because of homeowners either cancelling their inspections or not meeting the criteria. Nine inspection companies have been authorized by the Florida Department of Financial Services to conduct these inspections.

JVI expects to be able to conduct 1500 of these free wind inspections, valued at $140 each, starting in mid-January on a first-come, first-served basis. Homes receiving a wind mitigation inspection and subsequent report typically save $220 on their hurricane insurance, according to Tami Torres, My Safe Florida Home program administrator.
