James Hollis, Noted Jungian Scholar and Author to Present Public Program at Saybrook Graduate School

Hollis Directs Saybrook’s Jungian Studies Program Which Will Be Available Locally to Bay Area Students for Fall 2009

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--James Hollis, Ph.D., distinguished faculty at Saybrook Graduate School and noted Jungian scholar and author will give a public presentation in the Bay Area on Saturday, January 17 on “Shadow Encounters in Personal and Public Life,” a lecture that is free and open to the public. The program will be held at 10 a.m. at the Westin San Francisco Airport Hotel 1 Old Bayshore Highway, Millbrae, CA. The lecture will discuss what legendary psychologist Carl Jung called “the Shadow” – the energies, motives, and agendas in every person which operate outside of our conscious control and are sometimes contrary to our professed values.

According to Hollis, one of America’s leading Jungian psychologists and director of Saybrook’s Jungian Studies program, distrusting and disliking something about yourself is a fundamental part of the human experience: but one that we rarely understand.

The Shadow is not synonymous with evil, although evil may arise from our disowned parts. His presentation will define and illustrate the many ways the Shadow operates in personal and social life – and the opportunity it represents for greater self-awareness and wholeness.

This coming academic year will mark the first that Saybrook, in partnership with the Jung Center of Houston, can offer graduate level courses in Jungian psychology – both historical and current – to San Francisco based students. Saybrook's new M.A. and Ph.D. Psychology degrees specializing in Jungian Studies offer Bay Area students the chance to combine the best aspects of distance learning – studying at their own pace, on their own schedules – with in-class experiences provided through intensive seminars and retreats in San Francisco, CA and Houston, TX.

Based in San Francisco, Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center is the world’s premier center for humanistic psychology, with a 30 year history including such notable faculty as Rollo May, James Bugental, and others.

Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center is a private, non-profit at-a-distance education institution offering M.A, Ph.D. and Psy.D. degrees in Psychology, Organizational Systems and Human Science.
