RMI and NetLogic Microsystems Collaborate to Deliver Reference Design Showcasing Unprecedented Security and Content Inspection Performance for Small and Midsized Business Consumers
RMI® Multi-Core, Multi-Threaded XLS Processor™ and NetLogic Microsystems’ NETL7™ Content Processor Provide Best-in-Class Protection for SMB Networks Against Malicious Cyber Security Attacks
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--RMI Corporation, a leading supplier of multi-core, multi-threaded processors for communications and media rich applications, today announced that it has collaborated with NetLogic Microsystems, Inc. [NASDAQ:NETL], the leader in the design and development of knowledge-based processors and high-speed integrated circuits, to deliver RMI’s latest reference design showcasing the industry’s best price/performance for deep packet inspection. The SMB secure wireless gateway reference design for small and midsize business (SMB) systems utilizes RMI’s multi-core, multi-threaded XLS Processor and NetLogic Microsystems’ NLS045 content processor, a member of the NETL7™ knowledge-based processor family, for advanced protection against cyber security attacks, such as viruses, intrusions, malware and spam for SMB systems.
At the center of the SMB secure wireless gateway reference design is the RMI XLS® multi-core multi-threaded processor, which features the proven Fast Messaging Network™ for efficient on-chip communication and autonomous security and compression engines off-loading the CPU to perform other critical tasks. The reference design is capable of supporting up to seven gigabit Ethernet (GE) ports, four USB ports, and compact flash. The on-board NLS045 content processor from NetLogic Microsystems accelerates deep packet inspection (DPI) functionality to enable unified threat management (UTM) and intrusion detection/prevention system (IPS/IDS) applications at wire-speed while supporting the most complex security databases exceeding 100,000 signatures without requiring any external memory. The reference design also connects to an 802.11n card through a MiniPCIe interface.
“By combining the capabilities of NetLogic Microsystems’ unmatched content processing technology with our industry-leading multi-core, multi-threaded XLS Processor, we believe that we are adding a level of protection and performance that is unmatched in the industry,” said Dilip Ramachandran, director of marketing at RMI. “This low-cost turnkey reference design will enable our customers to deliver high-performance security solutions to market quickly and in addition leverage the highly scalable XLS product family ranging from single-core up to quad-core pin-to-pin compatible processors.”
NetLogic Microsystems’ NETL7 knowledge-based processor family comprises highly scalable solutions that are optimized to accelerate computationally intensive deep packet inspection functions for application-based networking and network security applications. By offering customers seamless scalability in hardware performance from 250Mbps to 20Gbps with a common set of APIs and software development kit (SDK), the NETL7 processors enable original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original design manufacturers (ODMs) to develop a wide range of systems, from entry-level SMB to high-performance carrier-class solutions. The NETL7 processors have been designed for multi-core, multi-threaded processing environments, and natively perform stateful cross-packet inspection in hardware. By integrating the revolutionary NETL7 Intelligent Finite Automaton (IFA) technology, the NLS045 content processor delivers significant power and cost savings for OEMs and ODMs developing solutions for the SMB market. In addition, NetLogic Microsystems’ NETL7 SDK includes a high-efficiency rule compiler that has been validated against leading real-world security databases and network traces, thereby providing customers with a highly robust solution for high-volume SMB applications. The NETL7 processors integrate on-chip memory and provides over 100 Terabits per second (Tbps) of ultra-low latency access bandwidth to on-chip rule databases to effectively accelerate complex and iterative content inspection, while eliminating the need to provision for the high-latency and costly off-chip memory that are required by competing solutions.
“We are excited to have broadened our collaboration with RMI to cover the entire spectrum of performance and price points, from the high-end 20Gbps reference design to this new SMB solution,” said Mike Ichiriu, senior director of Layer 7 products at NetLogic Microsystems. “By collaborating with RMI, we are delivering to our customers a reference platform with best-in-class performance, low power consumption, seamless scalability and highly innovative technologies that allows our customers to develop advanced networking and security solutions for the SMB market with a much shorter time-to-market.”
RMI products push the edge of processor technology in performance and integration, and are used by system manufacturers and OEMs to address the infrastructure, enterprise, and consumer media markets. The company’s XLR®, XLS, and Alchemy™ processor families are based on innovative MIPS®-compatible architectures creating advanced, highly-integrated designs built on leading-edge silicon process technologies.
The SMB secure wireless gateway reference design is available now from RMI, and includes a full design kit, including schematics, gerbers, board layout files, and a complete software development kit. In addition, RMI has a full eco-system of ODMs and software partners to help customers accelerate time-to-market and lower development costs.
