Much agony but little ecstasy in the UK Home Improvements Market for next five years
A combination of a domestic slowdown and the dramatic turmoil in the US financial system has resulted in a bleak forecast for the replacement market in the UK.
This finding comes in the latest report - The market for Private Sector Home Improvements windows, doors and conservatories 2008* - from Palmer Market Research (PMR), the most authoritative organisation for analysing trends in the UK building industry. It follows its warning on the depth of the dramatic downturn experienced in new build and confirms fears that the UK fenestration sector will be in for a very tough time over the next four to five years.
Palmer notes that the market was down in all sectors in 2007 and the report, along with comprehensive charts and tables examine:
- The total home improvement market.
- Direct sell market.
- Builders' sector market.
- Economic background.
In the fenestration sector the products looked at were:
- Windows.
- Conservatories.
- Entrance doors.
- Sliding and French patio doors.
- Secondary glazing.
The report covers bi-folding doors for the first time and also introduces evaluations of roof windows and energy rated windows. All installed value forecasts are given at 2007 prices.
Findings It comes as no surprise to find that overall in installed value terms the home improvement market declined by 5.2% in 2007 to £4.32 billion; the poorest performance since 2002.
Palmer notes that every sector recorded reversals in volume terms for all major product areas with falls of:
- Windows -5.2%.
- Conservatories -5.5%.
- Entrance doors -1.7%.
- Patio doors down -4.7%.
PVC-U has remained the principal material for home improvements, although it has experienced a serious drop in demand across the board, except for entrance doors. PMR has found that in volume terms, demand fell in 2007 by:
- Windows -5.5%.
- Conservatories -5%.
- Entrance doors 4%.
- Patio and French doors -5.5%.
