American Nuclear Society Honors AREVA’s Chalon Saint-Marcel Plant

The American Nuclear Society (ANS) has bestowed its Nuclear Historic Landmark Award to AREVA’s (Paris:CEI) Chalon Saint-Marcel plant.

This honor, presented on November 11 in Reno, Nevada (USA), is made in recognition of distinguished sites that make significant contributions to the development of nuclear energy, and that implement advanced industrial technologies.

In operation since 1975, Chalon Saint-Marcel currently employs 1,100 people, including highly-qualified engineers, managers, technicians and operators.

It has been a key contributor to the global development of nuclear power, having manufactured more than 560 heavy components for reactors, including reactor vessels, steam generators and pressurizers, as well as associated items. These components, weighing up to 540 tons, have been fitted to power plants in France, China, the United States, South Africa, South Korea, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Finland and Sweden. It is also where AREVA is manufacturing components for the Finnish, French and Chinese EPRs.

Now, more than ever, Chalon Saint-Marcel is one of the pillars of AREVA’s integrated industrial model. Its extension in 2006 ^[1], and ongoing investment (totaling nearly €50 million since 2003) and recruitment (around 600 new hires in the last four years), all bear witness to the energy at the site.

AREVA is continuing to adapt its industrial tools to keep pace with the growing worldwide demand for nuclear equipment. Recently, the group announced the construction of a heavy component manufacturing plant in Newport News, Virginia (USA).
