Here are highlights from Monday’s Analyst Blog:
CEMEX Weak Results Continue
CEMEX (NYSE: CX) is a leading global producer of cement and ready-mix products, with operations concentrated in major cement markets of four continents. CEMEX serves clients ranging from individual homebuilders to large industrial contractors.
We are keeping our Sell rating on CEMEX. The company posted weak results in the third quarter of 2008 together with a 74% year-over-year decline in net income. The continued weak cement volumes in Spain and U.S. are problematic.
Baxter Outlook: Safe and Bullish
Baxter International (NYSE: BAX) is a global medical products and services company with expertise in medical devices, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. The company operates through three main lines of business: BioScience, Medication Delivery and Renal.
We believe these markets will remain relatively insulated from the current economic turmoil, providing investors good quality returns on a risk-adjusted basis. Baxter's strong market position is demonstrated in its recent quarterly performance that exceeded estimates and led the management to increase fiscal 2008 EPS guidance for the second quarter in a row.
Web.com Attractive Long-Term
Web.com (Nasdaq: WWWW) is a leading provider of Web services for small and medium businesses (SMBs). The company uses a factory approach that it can leverage over thousands of customers.
We believe the company is feeling pressure from a slowing consumer market, which many of its customers cater to. However, the long-term still looks bright.
Gilead Offers Opportunities
Foster City, CA, based Gilead Sciences, Inc. (Nasdaq: GILD) is perhaps the world’s premier play on HIV/AIDS therapy. Gilead’s third quarter financial results were solid -- nothing new -- for the company, as management has posted upside surprise after upside surprise throughout the past several years. EPS of $0.55 in the quarter was $0.02 above our forecasts based on strong product sales and lower-than-expected SG&A [selling, general and administrative] costs.
The pipeline is also progressing nicely. Letairis should become the best-in-class ETRA for PAH, and given the lack of drug-drug interactions seen in the phase III trials, it should be used first-line with Pfizer’s (NYSE: PFE) Revatio. We are pleased with the Letairis launch so far and expect a meaningful ramp in sales over the next few quarters.
