Harmonic Introduces Multi-Screen Transcoder for Mobile, Internet and “Sync-and-Go” TV Applications
– IP-Based ProStream™ 4000 Supports a Broad Range of Applications and Codecs, Seamlessly Integrates Into Existing IP Headends –
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ:HLIT) today introduced the ProStream™ 4000 multi-screen, real-time transcoder. This all-IP, software-based solution enables a converged “any-to-any” video experience by providing Internet TV, 3G/4G mobile TV and “sync-and-go” video delivery to devices such as mobile phones, personal computers, personal media players, IP-enabled set-top boxes and digital televisions.
The ProStream 4000 transcodes MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) content into a variety of formats suitable for mobile and Internet TV delivery, as well as for synchronizing content from a digital video recorder for on-the-go viewing on portable media players. The high performance ProStream 4000 delivers up to 16 channels in a compact one rack-unit (1-RU) design and is software upgradable, providing operators with a highly scalable system. The all-IP solution drives down system costs and is easily integrated into existing IP headends.
“Harmonic’s ProStream 4000 transcoder enables real-time, anytime, anywhere viewing of broadcast quality video content,” said Thierry Fautier, Director of Telco Solutions for Harmonic Inc. “The ProStream 4000 solution leverages Harmonic’s extensive video processing expertise and leadership and is designed to provide a more compelling multi-screen video experience for the user. It delivers high performance and reliability, and provides operators with a cost-effective and scalable tool to increase revenue streams by simply and quickly adding new, value-added services to their existing offering.”
The ProStream 4000 real-time transcoder complements Harmonic’s Rhozet™ Carbon Coder™ and Carbon Server™ file-based transcoding solutions. Harmonic’s LIVEcut™ ingest gateway software can be used to schedule recording of content for “catch-up” mobile and Internet TV applications.
The ProStream 4000 supports a wide range of video codecs, including MPEG-4 AVC high/main/baseline, MPEG-4 SP, H.263 and MPEG-2 MP@ML. The solution also supports audio pass-through and various audio codecs, including conversion to AMR-NB and MPEG-1 LII.
Harmonic is working with leading vendors in the mobile and Internet TV ecosystem, including set-top-box suppliers, middleware providers, and manufacturers of cell phones and portable media players. Harmonic’s multi-screen convergence demonstration, featuring the ProStream 4000 multi-screen transcoder integrated with a number of third-party devices, will be on display at IBC 2008 in Amsterdam, stand #1.C61, taking place from September 12–16.
The ProStream 4000 transcoder will be available for customer shipments in Q4 2008.
