NBC4 Launches NBC Los Angeles Traffic Cam
Mobile Application Helps Commuters Plan Ahead with Access to Live Roadside Cameras and Provides Valuable Real-Time Traffic Information
BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--NBC4 has partnered with 3rd Dimension to launch NBC Los Angeles Traffic Cam, a free service for mobile phone users providing live, up-to-the-second traffic information for Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties.
The advertising supported service, powered by Mobileyes software from 3rd Dimension, Inc., is designed to help millions of daily commuters view traffic tie-ups on their mobile devices before leaving home, office or school. With access to a network of 270+ live, roadside cameras, NBC Los Angeles Traffic Cam can help data-enabled cell phone users plan their commutes more carefully and avoid gridlock areas.
"When I met the folks at 3rd Dimension, it was immediately obvious to me that their technology would be a great addition for us and that it would enable us to further empower our viewers. Being able to give viewers a live look at traffic cameras on their mobile device - that's the ultimate in relevant content," said Ginger Zumaeta, Vice President, Advertising and Promotion, NBC4 Los Angeles.
To download the application, commuters simply enter their mobile number by clicking on the NBC Los Angeles Traffic Cam link at www.KNBC.com or by calling 1-877-NBC-LA04 (1-877-622-5204). A text message is then sent to the user, who can follow a link to download and install the application.
Once installed, users can view 270+ roadside traffic camera displays that are operated by Caltrans District 7 and made available through Metro's RIITS Network. Selecting cameras along the route from the menus is simple and user-friendly. Freeways, highways and city streets of interest are available with full motion video or up-to-the-second still photos. As an added bonus, favorite routes can be stored and accessed quickly with a push of a single button.
"As the region continues to grapple with traffic congestion, Metro, along with our partner Caltrans, continues to look at ways we can better manage the flow of freeway traffic," said Metro CEO Roger Snoble. "The information we are providing through this service will play a key role in informing motorists about freeway tie-ups in a convenient and fast way."
"Caltrans is pleased to add this service of real-time traffic information provided directly to motorists to enhance their use of our existing transportation system," said California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District Director Doug Failing. "As safety is the Department's number one priority, we also want to encourage users to drive responsibly with regard to their cell phones."
The NBC Los Angeles Traffic Cam application is compatible with data enabled phones on the Sprint, Verizon Wireless, AT&T and T-Mobile networks, and includes popular smartphones such as the BlackBerry, Palm Treo and the Motorola Q.
"This is a unique offering for our viewers and one that can truly make a difference in their daily commutes and leisure travel," added Craig Robinson, Executive Vice President, Operations and Digital Strategy, NBC4.
"Los Angeles represents an integral component to building a nationwide mobile traffic advisory network powered by Mobileyes," said Eric Joseph, president, 3rd Dimension. "The software adds greater value to the computing power of mobile phones, offers commuters a valuable service and provides our partners with another foothold in the integrated media landscape."
