eTec Provides a Custom eTec HICE Silverado to Sierra Lobo, Inc. to be Powered by Liquid Hydrogen
Customized eTec HICE Silverado to be used by Sierra Lobo, Inc. in Department of Defense Technology Program
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Electric Transportation Engineering Corporation (eTec), a wholly owned subsidiary of ECOtality, Inc. (OTCBB: ETLY), a leader in clean electric transportation and storage technologies, today announced it has provided a custom eTec Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (HICE) Silverado truck to Sierra Lobo, Inc. (Milan, Ohio), to be powered by the No-Vent Liquid Hydrogen Storage and Delivery System™ that Sierra Lobo, Inc. is currently developing under contract with the Department of Defense (DOD). While eTec currently has several HICE vehicles that are powered by compressed hydrogen in operation throughout North America, the eTec HICE Silverado delivered to Sierra Lobo, Inc. will be the first eTec HICE vehicle to be powered using liquefied hydrogen technology.
“The eTec HICE Silverado continues to be one of the most advanced HICE vehicles currently in production, and our work with advanced technologies, like those being developed at Sierra Lobo, Inc., allows us to be on the cutting edge of alternative fuels and transportation technologies”
“The eTec HICE Silverado continues to be one of the most advanced HICE vehicles currently in production, and our work with advanced technologies, like those being developed at Sierra Lobo, Inc., allows us to be on the cutting edge of alternative fuels and transportation technologies,” said Don Karner, President and CEO, eTec. “By working with strong organizations like Sierra Lobo, Inc., eTec is providing advanced technology solutions that accelerate the development of clean fuels, like hydrogen, that will reduce our emissions and help alleviate our oil dependence.”
With technical assistance from project partner, Roush Industries, eTec led the conversion of the eTec HICE Silverado to be compatible with a liquefied hydrogen fuel system that produces nearly zero carbon emissions. Based on the full-size 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 HD pickup truck, the vehicle was customized to Sierra Lobo’s specification and underwent internal modifications to meet the technical demands and requirements needed to run on a liquefied hydrogen fuel system. Sierra Lobo, Inc. is developing the No-Vent Liquid Hydrogen Storage and Delivery System™ to be a safe and cost-effective system to store and deliver liquid hydrogen to fuel cell or combustion-powered vehicles. Liquid hydrogen, by virtue of its density, could provide two to five times more fuel than the current state-of-the-art compressed gas hydrogen fueling systems. The eTec HICE Silverado is the only production HICE vehicle participating in the Department of Energy’s Advanced Vehicle Testing Activity under the FreedomCar and Vehicle Technologies Program.
“The eTec HICE Silverado will assist Sierra Lobo, Inc. in the development and testing of our innovative liquefied hydrogen system and provides an ideal medium for us to test our technology in real-world automotive applications,” said Mark Haberbusch, Director of Research and Technology, Sierra Lobo, Inc. “Through collaboration with industry-leading firms such as eTec, Sierra Lobo, Inc. is developing safe, cutting edge, and economically competitive technologies in the areas of hydrogen and oxygen storage and utilization in the transportation and power generation industries.”
