WHY: |
The French Dip Sandwich was created at Philippe's in 1918, when Philippe's founder Philippe Mathieu inadvertently dropped a sliced French roll into a roasting pan filled with juice still hot from the oven while making a sandwich a customer had just ordered. The customer, a policeman, said he would take the sandwich anyway. He returned the next day with some friends asking for more "dipped" sandwiches. |
| Philippe's has been owned and operated by the same family since 1927 and is still the only restaurant in Los Angeles where you can order a 10-cent cup of coffee. | ||
