Samsungs Mobile WiMAX Technology Used to Launch Sprints Citywide Broadband Wireless Service in Baltimore

Sprints XOHM Business Unit Also Awarded Samsung the Dallas / Ft. Worth Market to Be Built with Their 4G Wireless Networking Infrastructure

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dallas-based Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile) announced today that Sprint (NYSE: S) has utilized Samsungs mobile WiMAX network infrastructure in Baltimore to launch commercial mobile WiMAX service under the XOHM (pronounced zoam) brand In addition, Sprints XOHM business unit has also awarded the Dallas / Ft. Worth market to be built using Samsungs infrastructure in preparation for commercial launch there in 2009.

XOHM is working with Samsung and other ecosystem partners to develop this new broadband wireless network that is designed to truly mobilize the Internet, bring next generation wireless innovation to devices and deliver new mobile multimedia applications to consumer, business and government customers. The mobile WiMAX network can deliver broadband access with speeds several times faster than current third-generation wireless networks.

The Dallas market joins previously announced New York, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston and Providence as major markets where Samsung will deliver the mobile WiMAX network infrastructure for Sprints XOHM business unit.

Samsung has been working diligently build Sprints XOHM mobile broadband Internet service compliant to the mobile WiMAX standard. Since finalizing a supply agreement in 2007, the two companies have steadily made progress on the extensive project with previous key milestones including first data session in the lab (June 2007), first data session on the live network in Washington D.C. (October 2007), and successful interoperability testing with multiple other device vendors (April 2008).

Earlier this year, Samsung also announced the introduction of several WiMAX-enabled devices. The Samsung Express Card (E100 PC Card) and Samsungs WiMAX embedded UMPC (Q1 Ultra Premium Mobile PC) clearly underscore Samsungs position as the leading provider of end-to-end mobile WiMAX network systems.

XOHM is utilizing the significant spectrum holdings at 2.5 GHz that were combined in the Sprint Nextel merger to deploy mobile WiMAX technology from Samsung and other vendors.
