Altea Therapeutics Appoints Dr. Richard H. Guy to its Scientific Advisory Board
Leading Scholar Renowned for His Work in Transdermal Drug Delivery
ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Altea Therapeutics announced today that Dr. Richard Guy, Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Head of the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology at the University of Bath, has joined the Company’s Scientific Advisory Board.
“The PassPort Transdermal Delivery System has the potential to expand the classes of drugs that can be painlessly delivered from a skin patch. I look forward to working with the scientific team at the Company.”
“Richard Guy is a leading scholar in the field of transdermal drug delivery. We are thrilled to welcome him as a member of our scientific advisory board and look forward to his close association with our scientists as we develop our proprietary transdermal patch technology, the PassPort System, designed for the efficient delivery of drugs that normally would need to be administered by needle injection, including proteins, carbohydrates and water-soluble drug salts,” said Dr. Eric Tomlinson, President and CEO for Altea Therapeutics.
“Altea Therapeutics has recently made several significant advances in the transdermal delivery field,” said Professor Guy, who added “The PassPort Transdermal Delivery System has the potential to expand the classes of drugs that can be painlessly delivered from a skin patch. I look forward to working with the scientific team at the Company.”
Dr. Guy’s principal scientific achievements are in the areas of characterizing the function of the skin barrier to drug absorption, enhancement of percutaneous absorption, iontophoresis, noninvasive bio-sensing of blood glucose and other analytes, and the prediction and assessment of skin penetration and topical bioavailability. Dr. Guy has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles and over 70 book chapters and has co-authored one book and co-edited 7 others. He is also a co-inventor on 10 patents. Dr. Richard Guy received an M.A. in Chemistry from Oxford University and a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of London. He has held academic posts at the University of California, San Francisco and the University of Geneva. Dr. Guy serves on the editorial advisory boards of numerous journals, including the European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics and Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics. He is a past President of the Controlled Release Society and is an advisor to several companies in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and biotechnology industries. Dr. Guy is an elected fellow of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Scientists, Great Britain, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
About Altea Therapeutics
Altea Therapeutics is an emerging specialty pharmaceutical company developing and commercializing products based on a new transdermal patch technology that can deliver sustained therapeutic levels of water-soluble drug salts, therapeutic proteins, vaccines and carbohydrates through the skin in a convenient, painless, and cost-effective manner. Altea Therapeutics has demonstrated in several clinical studies that its patented PassPort Transdermal System achieves what existing transdermal patches are unable to do, namely the continuous delivery through the skin of compounds that are typically administered by needle injections.
The company is conducting clinical trials in the United States for its products, including for an insulin transdermal patch that provides continuous delivery of basal levels of insulin for people with diabetes, a fentanyl citrate transdermal patch that enables rapid and safe management of moderate to severe pain. Furthermore, the company is in pre-clinical development with a number of product candidates, including a low-molecular-weight heparin patch for thrombosis, a parathyroid hormone analog transdermal patch for osteoporosis, and an atypical antipsychotic transdermal patch for the management of psychosis.
Altea Therapeutics is the recipient of the Frost & Sullivan 2007 Technology Innovation Award for its development of the PassPort System.
