New Vice President of Engineering Joins Medsphere Executive Team

MTI Founder Signs On to Develop Infrastructure for OpenVista Ecosystem

ALISO VIEJO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Medsphere Systems Corporation, the leading commercial provider of Open Source-based electronic health record (EHR) systems and services, today announced the appointment of Scott McMullen as vice president of engineering. With more than two decades in software and business development, McMullen has been a champion of the implementation of software development processes for computer based medical systems, adapting and streamlining public sector Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) standards to private industry.

“We are, after all, building not just a company, but also the largest collaborative ecosystem in the healthcare industry. The prospect of applying established processes to parallel endeavors under the Medsphere banner made it clear Scott was the best possible prospect to lead our engineering efforts.”

Scotts experience in developing both systems and businesses simultaneously is very valuable, and will serve Medsphere well in this growth stage of company evolution, said Medsphere CEO Michael J. Doyle. We are, after all, building not just a company, but also the largest collaborative ecosystem in the healthcare industry. The prospect of applying established processes to parallel endeavors under the Medsphere banner made it clear Scott was the best possible prospect to lead our engineering efforts.

In 1992 McMullen founded Systems Engineering and Development Corporation, incorporated later as McMullen Technologies Inc. (MTI), a consulting firm specializing in software development services and system engineering focused primarily on medical devices and healthcare information technology (IT). Success at MTI was achieved largely through assisting startups and acquired business units in companies such as Baxter Healthcare and Alcon progress from early stages to profitability through the implementation of repeatable processes.

In 2004 McMullen moved to a senior leadership position with Misys, where his accomplishments included contributing to a 1200 percent rate of growth in year-to-year monthly revenues in just over two years. Before founding MTI, McMullen held senior leadership positions with Baxter and at General Dynamics, where he began his career in signal processing, control systems, and system engineering.

I like this whole business. This is a noble profession, what we do here, McMullen said of using information technology to improve healthcare. Beyond that, Medsphere is going about the business in a way thats very different. I believe that the Medsphere ecosystem is an approach to improving healthcare that will ultimately create the most beneficial solution.

McMullen is a graduate of the University of Illinois School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Medspheres OpenVista platform is based on the Open Source VistA EHR system developed by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, used in all VA facilities, and credited with helping turn the VA into a national leader in quality patient care. Medsphere has enhanced VistA to meet the needs of non-VA healthcare providers and added professional services, ongoing product development, and 24x7 technical support, providing the safety of a professional Open Source delivery model without expensive proprietary license fees.

The addition of McMullen to the Medsphere executive team is only the most recent in a sequence of events that includes Doyle taking over leadership as CEO and Rick Jung coming onboard as chief marketing officer. Additionally, OpenVista was recently selected by Century City Doctors Hospital in Los Angeles, and Medsphere finalized an important partnership with Keane, Inc., to deliver integrated best-of-suite clinical and financial software. The companys current activities include OpenVista implementations at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
