Idearc Media and Multiplied Media Extend Local Search Offering to Microsoft Windows Live™ Messenger Users
DALLAS & CALGARY, Alberta--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Idearc Media Corp., home to Superpages.com® and publisher of the Verizon® Yellow Pages, and Multiplied Media Corporation (TSX Venture:MMC) are collaborating to deliver Superpages.com’s full directory of local business listings over instant messaging platforms.
Under a newly signed agreement, both Multiplied Media’s Poynt service and Superpages.com’s directory will be available through Microsoft’s Windows Live Messenger, one of the largest instant messaging networks in North America.
“This is an important application for our multi-platform strategy,” said Eric Chandler, President – Internet for Idearc Media. “It is difficult to predict where consumers are going to be when they search for local information. That is why it’s important to deliver content to multiple platforms – including instant messaging – so our advertisers appear wherever the end-user is searching.”
According to the Radicati Group, 21 billion instant messages are estimated to be sent per day worldwide in 2007. Poynt, Multiplied Media’s local search offering, is the first local search service to be available on instant messaging, making the service available to approximately 70 million users in the U.S. The Poynt service will be available this fall, and additional information will be provided in conjunction with the service release.
“We are pleased to extend our relationship with Idearc. The addition of the Windows Live Messenger network provides even greater exposure for the large base of local advertisers in Idearc’s Superpages.com service,” said John Lowe, CEO, Multiplied Media. “Idearc understands the value of making their advertisers’ content available to a broad base of users through this frequently used channel.”
The Poynt service is convenient for consumers who use instant messaging frequently. For example, a consumer searching for a local restaurant in Dallas would simply add the Poynt address as a contact in Windows Live Messenger then “chat” with that contact like any other friend. The consumer will be asked to set the location they wish to search from – an address, zip code or landmark and then type in the type of business they are looking for. In this instance, a list of restaurants would be returned to the user, with those closest to the search location listed first. In addition to business names and proximity, the Poynt service will also provide business details including an address, phone number, driving directions and a map.
In 2006, Superpages.com, an expert in local search, had more than 2.8 billion network searches and more than 18 million small-to-medium-sized business listings in the United States, 11 million of which feature enhanced content.
