Userplane Launches ‘Feeds’ to Provide Collection of APIs – All Free, and Able to Generate Revenue for Websites
‘Feeds’ Marks Evolution of Userplane as Engine of Distribution, Giving Online Communities Umbrella Access to AOL’s Portfolio of Website-Enhancing Applications
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Userplane (http://www.userplane.com), the premier application platform for online communities and a wholly owned subsidiary of AOL, today unveiled Userplane Feeds – a collection of free APIs, making it easy for website developers and publishers to access and integrate applications that add content and function to their websites. Each “Feed” is offered as a free, ad-supported solution, and can be integrated with Userplane Money to generate revenue for the site.
The company made the announcement from the Web 2.0 Summit, at the Palace Hotel, in San Francisco through Friday.
Userplane’s first Featured Feed is AOL’s Truveo™ Video Search, available now at http://www.userplane.com/feeds/. Userplane soon will add MapQuest® and real-time news stream Relegence® – both AOL subsidiaries – to its collection. Separately, the company also is working to offer messaging interoperability with AIM®.
“We’re bringing AOL’s many applications under one umbrella, providing a new way for websites to grow along with AOL’s expanding suite of tools,” said Michael Jones, CEO of Userplane and vice president of AOL. “We’re continuing to expand the Web 2.0 tools we offer to publishers – offering free ad-supported community tools, creating meaningful revenue opportunities and, now, serving as a point of distribution for a variety of AOL technologies.”
This is the latest in a series of Userplane advancements that bring more function and revenue opportunities to developers and web publishers. Userplane recently added its popular Webrecorder to its suite of free, ad-supported applications – a suite that also includes the company’s ubiquitous text/voice/video chat and IM tools. Earlier this year the company rolled out Userplane Money, a rev-share program that when engaged with Userplane apps, makes it easy for publishers to make more money online.
The Truveo Video Search API allows developers to easily integrate a feature-rich video search service into their websites. The Truveo back-end is constantly indexing new videos from all over the web, including sites like MySpace, YouTube and AOL Video. Developers can access the data contained in the Truveo video search index to build a variety custom applications that feature video search functionality.
Userplane will continue to build publisher tools while expanding its collection of Feeds to include a variety of content feeds, widgets and search results pages.
More than 180,000 online communities have deployed Userplane applications – from social-networking communities to dating sites to blogs to news sites. Userplane tools are used by millions of daily users in more than 30 countries.
