Senator John Kerry to Outline Legislative Solutions to Climate Change at National Press Club Luncheon

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Massachusetts Senator John Kerry will discuss his ideas for legislative solutions to climate change and his new book, This Moment on Earth, at a National Press Club luncheon on Wednesday, June 6.

Currently serving his 4th term in office, Senator Kerry Chairs the Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship and serves on the Finance, Foreign Relations and Commerce, Science and Transportation Committees. He is a vocal advocate for preventing and responding to climate change, recently introducing legislation to direct the Army Corps of Engineers to factor climate change into future water projects and no longer build bridges, levees, dams or other projects without assessing impact on the environment.

After graduating from Yale in 1966, Kerry volunteered to serve in Vietnam, where he ultimately completed two tours of duty. He was awarded a Silver Star, a Bronze Star with Combat V, and three Purple Hearts for his service.

Upon returning to the United States, Kerry testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee regarding a policy he felt gave politicians political cover while soldiers bore the real burden. He went on to found the Vietnam Veterans of America to fight for veterans benefits, for extension of the G.I. Bill for Higher Education, and for treatment of PTSD.

Kerry graduated from Boston College Law School in 1976, and worked as a prosecutor in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, where he took on organized crime, fought for victims' rights and created programs for rape counseling.

Kerry was elected Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts in 1982. In that office, he organized the nation's Governors to combat the acid rain that was polluting lakes, rivers, and the nation's water supply. Two years later, he was elected to the United States Senate.

In 2003, Kerry announced that he would be a candidate for president of the United States and mounted a come from behind campaign that won the Democratic nomination. He lost the general election to George W. Bush.

The National Press Club breakfast will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m. Senator Kerrys remarks begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by a question and answer session.

To make reservations, please call (202) 662-7501, or email pnelson@press.org. Cost of the luncheon is $16 for National Press Club members, $28 for guests of members.

The National Press Club is located at 14th and F. Streets, NW, one block west of Metro Center. More information about the Club and its programs is found on its Internet website: www.press.org.
