Bio-Matrix Scientific CEO Highlights Plans for First Commercial Adult Stem Cell Bank Derived from Fat and Medical Devices Aimed at Plastic Surgeons and Liposuction Patients

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Bio-Matrix Scientific Group (OTCBB:BMSN) Chairman and CEO David R. Koos gives his views about rolling out a new direction in stem cell banking by providing the first commercial adult stem cell processing and banking facility in the U.S. that is focused on harvesting non-controversial stem cells from adipose, or fat tissue, and the biotechnology companys plans for penetrating the market with its disposable instruments for use in stem cell harvesting and tissue transfer initially targeting plastic surgeons and their liposuction patients in a Q & A interview published May 14, 2007 in The Wall Street Transcript (twst.com).

In bringing his perspectives to The Wall Street Transcript, an independent weekly investment publication for serious investors, Mr. Koos said of the competitive landscape: Stem cell banking commercially in the U.S. has been focused around cord blood. Our big competitive advantage is that we anticipate being the first company to commercially bank adult stem cells. There are research entities that bank adult stem cells on a short-term basis strictly for research purposes. For commercial purposes namely patients wanting to store their stem cells we believe that we will be the first in the U.S. to do that. Because weve chosen adult stem cells derived from fat we feel we have a leg up in that competitive arena because were going to be dealing directly with plastic surgeons, cosmetic surgeons and other professionals in the tissue management industry. I dont see a really competitive climate out there initially for us because we are unique.

To date, most stem cell banks worldwide have focused primarily on the storage of cord blood specimens, which can only be harvested immediately after birth. In contrast, adipose tissue contains stem cells that can be harvested at any point of an individuals life for regenerative medical purposes. There were approximately 12 million body sculpting, liposuction tissue transfer type procedures done last year by plastic and cosmetic surgeons. The material is already there as residual material from procedures which have already been performed, he said.

Mr. Koos also highlighted a second business that is coming to market at Bio-Matrixs new 15,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art stem cell cryogenic bank and research laboratory facility in San Diego that also focuses on instrumentation for adult stem cell research and tissue management, which is the nucleus of the companys products for use in both cosmetic and therapeutic procedures such as liposuction and tissue biopsy. We have 192 disposable instruments for use in stem cell harvesting and tissue transfer. We are in the process of finalizing our cGMP Good Manufacturing Practices and cGTP Good Tissue Practices policies that are required by the FDA, he said. The Company anticipates completing requirements to open its facility in the near future.
