Paso Robles Named ''The Up-and-Coming'' California Wine Region
VENTURA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In a recent survey conducted by The California Wine Club, Paso Robles, American Viticultural Area (AVA) was selected as the next up-and-coming California wine region. Paso Robles, AVA received the highest number of votes, with more than 28 percent of the votes cast for this wine region. www.cawineclub.com.
“there is no question that a decade from now, the top viticultural areas of Santa Barbara, Santa Rita Hills and the limestone hillsides west of Paso Robles will be as well-known as the glamorous vineyards of Napa Valley.”
“Paso Robles has quickly become one of the rising stars in California winemaking,” says Bruce Boring, co-founder and owner of The California Wine Club. “When my wife Pam and I travel across California’s wine regions searching for the next gem, we’re always amazed at the terrific wines and wineries in Paso Robles,” he added.
Paso Robles is home to more than 170 wineries and 26,000 vineyard acres focusing on premium wine production. The distinct micro-climates and diverse soils, combined with warm days and cool nights, make growing conditions ideal for producing more than 40 wine varieties from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, to Syrah, Viognier and Roussanne, to Zinfandel, the area’s heritage wine variety.
“It’s exciting to see wine enthusiasts recognizing Paso Robles as the next up and coming wine region,” said Stacie Jacob, executive director of the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance. “The region has more than tripled itself in size over the past decade and continues to gain national acclaim for the quality wines produced from the distinct characteristics of Paso Robles Wine Country.”
The California Wine Club members are not alone in their predictions for Paso Robles. Influential wine critic and authority Robert M. Parker, Jr., said in the June 30, 2005 issue of Wine Advocate, “there is no question that a decade from now, the top viticultural areas of Santa Barbara, Santa Rita Hills and the limestone hillsides west of Paso Robles will be as well-known as the glamorous vineyards of Napa Valley.” This mirrors his earlier prediction in the October 2004 issue of Food & Wine Magazine when he said California's Central Coast, which includes Paso Robles, “will rule America.”
“None of the above, no region compares to Napa Valley” received the second highest percentage of votes with 21%, while Sonoma Coast, AVA was close behind in third place with 19% of the votes. Monterey, AVA and Santa Ynez Valley, AVA were virtually tied for fourth place with over 8 percent of the votes. Also making the list were Santa Maria Valley, AVA, Lake County, AVA, Amador County, AVA, and Santa Rita Hills, AVA. The California Wine Club received more than 750 responses from members across America.
