Former Collagen Executives Lead Entry Into High Growth Markets

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aesthetic Sciences Corporation formed in 2004 to develop breakthrough products in the fields of aesthetic medicine and incontinence, announced the completion of its Series A financing with Domain Associates, LLC and New Leaf Venture Partners. Aesthetic Sciences Corporation (Aesthetic Sciences) received $3.2 million last week to complete the total of $6.0 million raised for the Series A financing.

“We are pleased to see the progress of Aesthetic Sciences using Landec’s polymer technology to create better solutions in these two areas of growing demand.”

Aesthetic Sciences Chairman and CEO Gary S. Petersmeyer commented, We are very pleased to have this set of premier investors, along with our technology partner and one of the most experienced teams in our industry, as the foundation for our future growth and product innovations. In particular, with aging baby boomers, we expect facial aesthetic procedures to grow at a double digit annual rate for a number of years.

The Series A financing will continue the development of breakthrough technology for aesthetic procedures and the treatment of incontinence. Aesthetic Sciences has an exclusive license from Landec Corporation (Nasdaq:LNDC) for the worldwide use of Landec's patented materials technology in the fields of aesthetic medicine and incontinence.

Rebecca A. Stirn, Aesthetic Sciences President and CFO remarked, This patented non-water technology will allow the development of a family of polymers designed to solve the long-standing issue of short persistence of many of the current products in the fields of aesthetic medicine and incontinence. This technology gives Aesthetic Sciences the potential to provide physicians and patients with a choice of products which will offer a range of persistence from over one year to more than five years.

Jesse Treu, Partner of Domain Associates, LLC and Director of Aesthetic Sciences said, These extraordinary new materials have the potential to become the #1 choice in the dermal filler category. We believe Aesthetic Sciences can become a leader in this segment."

Kathy La Porte, Partner of New Leaf Ventures and Director of Aesthetic Sciences, added, We look forward to working with the Aesthetic Sciences team, which brings tremendous background and a strong collective track record in aesthetic product development, business strategy and market positioning.

Gary Steele, Landec's President and CEO said, We are pleased to see the progress of Aesthetic Sciences using Landecs polymer technology to create better solutions in these two areas of growing demand. Landec holds a minority interest in Aesthetic Sciences and will receive royalties on sales by Aesthetic Sciences in the designated fields of use.
