UC Irvine Extension Introduces Intensive Seminar, 'Nanotechnology: Applications and Opportunities'

UC Irvine Extension is offering a two-day Intensive Seminar Program titled "Nanotechnology: Application and Opportunities" Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15 and 16, 2006, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the UCI Learning Center in Orange.
The seminar, which will feature guest lecturers from both academia and business, will expose participants to the nanotech resources in their own backyards, and bring together local business leaders and university faculty currently applying these technologies. Participants will not only receive the opportunity to pose questions and exchange information with industry leaders, but will also learn how nanotechnology is already improving products and services and giving local companies in fields such as biomedical devices, medical diagnostics, advanced electronics, computing, biotechnology and synthetic chemistry a competitive edge.
"Nanotechnology will impact nearly every industry over the next few years," said Rogelio C. Rodriguez, director of engineering and science programs for UC Irvine Extension. "Small technologies are currently transforming product development and process improvements, and finding many applications ranging from integrated circuits to medical technology to consumer electronics."
Nanotechnology is defined as "technology development at the atomic, molecular, or macromolecular range," and relies on multiple scientific disciplines such as materials science, chemistry, biology, electrical and mechanical engineering. With its interdisciplinary nature, commercial applications using nanoscale sciences will thrive in a collaborative environment where industry is exposed to both scientific and business-related nanotechnology advances.
UC Irvine Extension's course will cover nanotechnology concepts, tools for measuring and manufacturing nanostructures, nanomaterial uses, commercial application opportunities and business implications. At the end of the seminar students will be able to describe the emerging field of nanotechnology and identify its anticipated impact on commercial applications, analyze and relate how this emerging field can lead to technological advances and recognize the business potential to use or integrate nanotechnology applications into existing manufacturing processes.
"Nanotechnology: Application and Opportunities" will be taught by Vicki Clements, president of NanoSciences Inc., a strategic marketing and consulting resource for companies concentrating on small technology applications. Clements specializes in early-stage commercialization strategies, including conducting market assessments and writing business plans for startup ventures.
