5,500 Companies Engage in the $45 Billion Sawmills and Plywood Mills Industry in the US
Brief Excerpt from Industry Overview Chapter:
The lumber and plywood manufacturing industry in the US comprises about 5,500 companies with combined annual revenue of $45 billion. The industry includes the manufacturing divisions of large timber companies like Weyerhaeuser; Louisiana Pacific; and Georgia-Pacific (G-P); several hundred companies with annual revenue over $20 million, and a large number of single-operation companies with annual revenue under $5 million.
The industry is highly fragmented in the sawmill segment, where the 20 largest companies hold only a 36 percent share of the market, but highly concentrated in the plywood segment, with the top 20 companies holding more than 85 percent of the market.
COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Sawmills are located close to their source of raw material because of the high costs of transporting raw timber. Local mills can often compete successfully with those of large companies because they can efficiently serve a local market. However, there are big economies of scale in sawmill operations. Large mills can have annual revenue per employee of close to $300,000, while small mills may achieve only half as much. Sawmills can operate with only a modest investment of capital but plywood mills require expensive equipment and therefore are usually large plants with high annual volume that service a wide geographical area.
PRODUCTS, OPERATIONS & TECHNOLOGY
Sawmills process raw logs in a few simple operating steps.
