Mobile Action's FoneJoy Technology Gives Content Providers Digital Rights Management for MP3 on Cellular Handsets
| New DRM Approach Allows Content Providers to Securely Deliver Any Media Format to New Generation of Multimedia Cellular Phones |
“Mobile Action is taking the lead to help content providers retain control of copyrighted materials, and allow consumers to make the most of their paid Internet music services”
Mobile Action (http://usa.mobileaction.com), a global leader in mobile management software, today announced that it has developed a secure method of delivering MP3 music and multimedia files to cellular phone users using Digital Rights Management (DRM). The new technology is part of FoneJoy, an enabling technology that allows digital content providers to securely deliver content for playback on both PC and cellular handsets, and allows consumers to buy MP3 music files for playback on multiple devices.
FoneJoy is a secure transaction system that allows content providers to manage the purchase of music, games, movies, and other digital contents. FoneJoy includes DRM so providers can limit the number of copies of copyrighted material, or timelock multimedia files so they will only work for a pre-set period prior to purchase. FoneJoy allows content providers to deliver multimedia files to users over a broadband Internet connection for transfer from a PC to a cellular handset. It also includes its own downloadable music player that allows users to create playlists and manage file transfers.
"Mobile Action is taking the lead to help content providers retain control of copyrighted materials, and allow consumers to make the most of their paid Internet music services," said Rebecca Chir, content manager for Mobile Action. "Verizon's new V Cast music service only supports Windows Media Format, which eliminates piracy by forcing users to buy music files for each target device, such as their cell phone. However, it also ignores the needs of the vast majority of Internet music customers who already subscribe to iTunes or an MP3 music service. With FoneJoy, we provide more security options, no matter what the media format. We give content providers an alternative that lets them secure their contents for delivery for playback on PC or cellular handset. It also gives users more flexibility, since they can buy songs or videos once and use them on both their PCs and their cell phones."
Rock Mobile in Asia has already signed an agreement with Mobile Action to deploy FoneJoy to deliver MP3 music to subscribers using DRM. Mobile Action expects to announce similar relationships with MP3 music services and other content providers in North America and Europe in the coming weeks.
