Advance Nanotech Highlights Homeland Security at NanoCommerce Conference; Panel Agrees That Nanotechnologies Hold Promising Advances for Homeland Security
Peter Gammel, Senior Vice President, Electronics, of Advance Nanotech, moderated the panel and speakers included Colin Cumming, President and CEO, Nomadics; Darrin Willauer, Vice President -Engineering, Nanotechnologies; and David MacDonald, President and CEO, Nanomix. The panel explored the heightened threat that terrorism has placed on governments and security forces around the globe, and the role that nanotechnology could play in helping organizations anticipate and respond faster to these risks.
“It is important for people to see that nanotechnology companies are working to develop these tools.”
"Homeland security is a top priority in both the government and corporate sectors. Nanotechnology has the potential to significantly improve early detection and response devices, providing law enforcement officials with better tools to combat terrorism," said Peter Gammel. "It is important for people to see that nanotechnology companies are working to develop these tools."
The panel found that miniaturized chemical detection devices and new materials development hold the most immediate promise for improving homeland security. Miniaturized chemical detection devices hold significant promise for the cost-effective detection of volatile organic compounds ranging from Sarin gas to pre-combustion fire indicators. These are currently very difficult to detect and differentiate in an inexpensive manner using existing chemical sensors. Advances in Nanomaterials enable the development of more durable protective devices by leveraging previously inaccessible combinations of material properties.
